God of War Ragnarok debuted last November to critical acclaim as it scored the second highest rating of 2022. The title also achieved massive commercial success and was one of the best-selling games of the year. In fact, the game set a record as the "fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history" with over five million units sold in its first week alone.
And even though it lost out on the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2022 to fierce rival Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok did win PlayStation’s Game of the Year award, alongside numerous other GOTY awards.
Now, PlayStation has teased that it will make an announcement about the recently released title, God of War Ragnarok, at the forthcoming Super Bowl LVII.
The short teaser clip, released to PlayStation Canada’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, features Mjolnir lying in the middle of a blizzard at what is supposedly the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the big game will take place on Sunday. The caption "Fimbulwinter at the big game?" accompanies the footage, which takes the form of a television ad.
Alongside the social media teases, PlayStation PR sent out a press release confirming the title’s appearance:
PlayStation invited fans to keep their eyes peeled on its social channels for more surprises and celebrations of fan favourite PS5 games. Today, Odin’s ravens spotted a new teaser on PlayStation Canada’s Instagram and Facebook channels, forecasting a blizzard on Midgard this Sunday night. To see how it all plays out, make sure you tune in to the big game this weekend!
PlayStation’s statement has generated many questions, especially since the game company did not provide any detail on the nature of its scheduled announcement. However, the game was only recently released, which leaves little to no chance that the announcement will be about a new game or a spinoff. Also, God of War Ragnarok’s director, Eric Williams, had previously stated that they have no intention of developing a DLC for the title, which effectively rules out that possibility.
Some sources have speculated that the announcement will be about the title’s New Game Plus mode. However, this would be tantamount to overkill as the company could simply have published a press release to that effect. Regardless of what Sony has in store for its best-selling title, fans of the franchise will have to wait till Sunday for concrete information.
By the way, Amazon Studios is adapting God of War Ragnarok’s predecessor, God of War, into a television series. While the show is still in the early development stages, Vernon Sanders, who heads the company’s television department, recently revealed that it will be a faithful adaptation of the source material.
God of War Ragnarok is currently available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
