HBO's The Last of Us is out already and to commemorate its release, Naughty Dog and Sony are releasing a free demo of the remake of the original source material on the PlayStation 5. The only catch is, you'll need an active PS Plus Premium subscription.
Naughty Dog confirmed the remake of the original 2013 title last year and it was met with mostly positive reviews with a hint of controversy. It didn't sell as well as most would've expected but Sony is probably hoping to get more people on the board with the release of HBO's The Last of Us.
Now that the critical darling of a show is available to watch, the two-hour trial for The Last of Us Part 1 is a nice touch.
Unfortunately, the majority of those who have a PS Plus Premium subscription have likely already played the "older" version of the game - The Last of Us Remastered is available as part of the PS Plus Collection for PS5 owners.
But, hey, you'll never know unless you try, right?
Now that the PS5 shortage is reportedly over and more stocks of the PS5 are available on the market, Sony is banking on non-gamers shelling out cash to buy a PS5 and a PS Plus Premium subscription after watching the first episode of HBO's The Last of Us on HBO and HBO Max.
It's certainly an interesting marketing strategy and one that could work.
HBO's The Last of Us is expected to air through March 12. The penultimate episode's release also coincides with the launch of The Last of Us Part 1 on the PC.
It should go without saying, but if you haven't played The Last of Us Part 1 before, you should be aware that the game is a playable spoiler. The same goes for its sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which is one of the most GOTY'ed games in history and is expected to be the basis of the plot for Season 2 of the show.
Speaking of PS Plus Premium, Sony recently revealed the new games lineup for the month.
