Payday 3 opens the new year with a teaser trailer and a release window

The highly anticipated threequel is scheduled to come out sometime later this year.

Video game developers and publishers very rarely announce anything on New Year's Eve if at all. But, for some reason, Starbreeze Studios and Overkill thought it was a good idea for a game to be announced amidst all the "new year, new me" posts over on most social media. Surprisingly enough, it worked, and Payday fans are now hyped that they'll get a chance to play the threequel sooner rather than later.

Payday 2 has lost a bit of its former momentum due to what happened a few years back but the series' fans should come back for Payday 3.

The developers and publisher beat everyone to the first release date reveal news of the year with a short teaser video as well as a link for players to wishlist the game on Steam.

According to the announcement, Payday 3 will be out on consoles and on PC later this year, which is a full decade since Payday 2 came out.

Here's the game's official description:

PAYDAY 3 is the much anticipated sequel to one of the most popular co-op shooters ever. Since its release, PAYDAY-players have been reveling in the thrill of a perfectly planned and executed heist. That’s what makes PAYDAY a high-octane, co-op FPS experience without equal.

Step out of retirement back into the life of crime in the shoes of the Payday Gang, the envy of their peers and the nightmare of law-enforcement wherever they go. Several years after the crew’s reign of terror over Washington DC has ended, they assemble once again to deal with the threat that roused them out of early retirement.

With a lucrative co-publishing deal secured, Payday 3 could be just as successful as its predecessor.

It's crazy to think that Payday 3 almost never got made. After releasing Payday 2 in 2013, Starbreeze Studios ran out of money to finance the ongoing development and support for Payday 2 in 2018. As a result, development was put to a stop until late 2019 after Starbreeze did some restructuring that Overkill finally got a chance to resume work on Payday 2. Over the years, Overkill and Starbreeze have released 10 DLC heists for the game as well as many other content drops.

For Payday 3, Starbreeze and Overkill are working together with Koch Media on a lifetime co-publishing deal.

It'll be interesting to see how well Payday 3 will do compared to Payday 2, which is widely considered one of the most popular co-op FPS games in history. If nothing else, a 7-year development cycle and a switch to Unreal Engine can only serve to its benefit.
