What is Old School RuneScape?
Old School RuneScape (sometimes abbreviated to OSRS) is an MMORPG created by Jagex and was released for Windows and OS X on February 22, 2013. It is technically a modified version of the first Runescape that ran until 2007. Although a more advanced RuneScape game has been introduced, massive fan demand led to a revival of the original RuneScape, now referred to as Old School RuneScape. This version was later ported to Android and iOS on October 30, 2018.
The gameplay was based on the RuneScape from the 2007 version and it supports cross-platform gameplay which can be played on both PC and mobile at the same time. The game is set in the Gielinor and the story encompasses five Ages. Although the graphics are 3D-rendered, OSRS is closer to Ultima Online than World of Warcraft with both its scope and overall gameplay.
The player must explore around different areas in Gielinor, interact with the NPCs and objects using a point-and-click interface, and fight anything they encounter. There are hundreds of story-driven quests to complete with different locations and dungeons to explore for free-to-play users. However, some quests require premium membership. The players in the game can earn Quest Points which measure completion. Free-to-play accounts can accumulate 44 Quest Points, while Premium OSRS users can gather 298 Quest Points.
The players in OSRS must learn different skills consisting of three types: Combat, Gathering, and Artisan. Combat skills include Attack, Strength, Defense, Magic, Ranged, Prayer, and Hitpoints. Gathering skills are comprised of Mining, Fishing, Woodcutting, Hunter, and Farming skills that allow the player to obtain resources. Finally, the Artisan skills such as Cooking, Smithing, Fletching, Firemaking, Herblore, Crafting, Runecrafting, and Construction allow the player to process items into usable goods. Every time the player uses a skill in OSRS, they gain experience and the total determines their character levels.
Gold is the main in-game currency in Old School RuneScape and can be earned from defeating enemies and bosses, completing quests, selling items, and purchasing with real money via microtransactions. This can then be used to buy weapons and items, or even Premium membership. Players can join the game's Premium membership which gives more features including 8 new skills, new additional quests, larger map size, 400 extra bank slots, access to special minigames, and more benefits.
The game also has a PvP mode where players can fight against other players. There are various PvP locations where players can participate, though with the constant danger of being ambushed. There is also a new game mode called Deadman Mode, which was added for more hardcore PvP players on October 29, 2015. This mode defaults to being a PvP-enabled open world and the player can earn rewards by defeating another player. If the player's avatar dies in this mode, it will lose the experience points and several items from their bank.
Old School RuneScape supports polls where players are asked what content they want to vote on. Generally, the content that garners the highest number of players' votes will be added to the game at some point in the future.
