"Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary." This continuation sets Luther up to be both pursuer and pursued.

The trailer opens with a detective, Odette Raine, informing DSU Martin Schenk that the unorthodox detective, DCI John Luther, had escaped prison. It goes on to show that the disgraced detective broke out to hunt the cyber psychopath and serial killer, David Robey, and bring him to book.

Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley reprise their roles as Luther and Schenk from the television series respectively. Apart from these two, the film stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, Lauryn Ajufo, Natasha Patel, and Henry Hereford.

Jamie Payne directs the Netflix title from a screenplay penned by Neil Cross. Elba, Cross, Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Jenno Topping served as producers. Also, Dan Finlay, Kris Thykier, Brendan Ferguson, Priscilla Parish, and Miki Emmerich served as executive producers on the film.

While there is no indication that Netflix intends to further continue the series, Elba has expressed his desire to keep playing the character for as long as possible. In an interview with Total Film, the 50-year-old actor expressed his wish that the franchise grows as big as that of James Bond.

In his words, "I want people to be like: ‘Ooh! Luther, the first film? Wicked.’ And to continue that. And then maybe later down the line, when I’m too old, someone else will step in to play John." Elba would definitely leave big shoes to fill.

Andy Serkis stars as David Robey, the arch-nemesis of Elba's character.

Elba also had some words for his arch-nemesis in the film Andy Serkis. During a joint interview with Netflix Tudum, the veteran British actor stated "This is where I fanboy out a little bit. I love Andy Serkis. I think he’s just mind-blowing as a talent."

Serkis shares a similar estimation of his co-star stating "I was a huge, huge fan of the show. I’ve always been a big fan of Idris’s work. He’s such a phenomenally instinctive and brilliant actor and especially in this role, he’s extraordinary."

By the way, Idris Elba has been confirmed to feature in the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC titled Phantom Liberty. Also, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently revealed that the actor, DJ, and RnB singer has been part of the conversation on who will take on the title of James Bond 007 following Daniel Craig’s exit.

Luther: The Fallen Sun will debut in select theaters on February 24 and is slated for release on the streaming platform on March 10, 2023.
