Netflix releases first official trailer for Extraction 2

Extraction 2 is Chris Hemsworth’s first movie since the release of Thor: Love and Thunder last year and following his Hollywood hiatus.

Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake in the upcoming Netflix action thriller film Extraction 2.

For many people, Extraction was one of the few positives of the pandemic era. The action thriller film, released in April 2020, became Netflix’s most-watched original film at the time with over 99 million viewers in its first four weeks. Now, three years later, the streamer has released the first trailer for the film’s sequel titled Extraction 2.

Extraction helmer Chris Hemsworth shared the trailer, which is available on YouTube, on his official Instagram page, with the caption, "You only get one shot at a second chance. EXTRACTION 2 debuts globally June 16, only on @Netflix. #TylerRakeLives". According to the video, Tyler Rake, Australian black ops mercenary, who seemingly died at the end of the first film, is alive.

The trailer provides a glimpse into Rake’s life nine months after the events of the original film. It opens with a prison scene, where Rake attempts to rescue a young woman named Ketevan. After, it pans to a riot in the prison yard and shows Rake trying to protect himself and Ketevan from the chaos while fighting through the crowd. Finally, it shows Rake taking down a helicopter with a machine gun while on a moving train.

Extraction 2’s official logline reads, "After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Rake is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.

While the trailer doesn’t provide details of how Rake survived his fatal injuries in the first film, it revealed that the character was clinically dead nine months before the events of Extraction 2 and fought his way back to life.

Like its predecessor, Extraction 2 is adapted from Ciudad, a graphic novel by Ande Parks, Erick Skillman, Fernando Leon Gonzalez, and the Russo brothers – Joe and Anthony Russo. Hemsworth, Adam Bessa, and Golshifteh Farahani reprise their roles from the first film. Other members of the cast include Olga Kurylenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Andro Jafaridze, Miriam and Marta Kovziashvili, Daniel Bernhardt, Tornike Gogrichiani, Levan Saginashvili, and George Lasha.

Like the first film, Hemsworth's character will be tasked with liberating a crime lord's family from prison.

Sam Hargrave reprises his role as director, while Joe Russo, who developed the screenplay, produced the film alongside his brother Anthony Russo and Hemsworth.

By the way, Hemsworth revealed last November that he has a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and will, as a result, take a step back from acting. Nevertheless, fans of the Australian actor need not worry that they won’t see him on screen again.

For one, he is willing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Asgardian god if the studio is willing to complete his story. The 39-year-old is also reportedly in the running to star in the planned Highlander remake, although it doesn’t have a release date yet.

Extraction 2 will debut on Netflix on June 16, 2023.
