Netflix has arguably the hottest whodunit property at the moment in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out fledgling cinematic series. The second installment currently sits in fourth place on Netflix's Top 10 most popular English films of all time. However, that is not the only high-profile film series of that genre that the streaming behemoth has in its catalog.
Another is Murder Mystery and Netflix has finally released the first trailer for Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to its comedy mystery film, which debuted in 2019. The film is one of 49 feature films that Netflix plans to release this year, including Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction 2, Eddie Murphy’s You People, and They Cloned Tyrone, among others.
The company unveiled Murder Mystery’s trailer on YouTube where it had the following description,:
Four years after solving their first murder mystery, Nick and Audrey Spitz (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston) are now full-time detectives struggling to get their private eye agency off the ground when they’re invited to celebrate the wedding of their friend the Maharaja (Adeel Akhtar) on his private island. But trouble follows the Spitzes again when the groom is kidnapped for ransom soon after the festivities begin — making each glamorous guest, family member, and the bride herself a suspect.
The original Murder Mystery starred Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as a couple who accidentally become detectives as they are caught amid a murder investigation. While the film received mixed critics’ reviews, it was popular with audiences. In fact, Murder Mystery had the biggest opening-weekend for a Netflix film at that point and it was also the most-viewed feature film for that calendar year.
Murder Mystery 2 is part of Sandler's $250-million-dollar four-film contract with Netflix. Similar to the second Knives Out installment, Murder Mystery 2 involves a very rich host and different guests who must be investigated to get the root of a crime.
Apart from Sandler, Aniston, and Akhtar, Murder Mystery 2 stars Mark Strong, Jodie Turner-Smith, Zurin Villanueva, Melanie Laurent, Kuhoo Verma, and Toni Goldwyn, among others. The film is directed by Jeremy Garelick and based on a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt also produces alongside Sandler, Aniston, Allen Covert, Tripp Vinson, and James D. Stern
Murder Mystery 2 will arrive on Netflix on March 31.
