It looks like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is in a good position to make history once it becomes available in late October.

According to Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2 has set a new Call of Duty record and it's not even out yet. Modern Warfare 2 enjoyed the highest player count of any open beta for any Call of Duty game. The Call of Duty team thanked the fans for giving Modern Warfare 2 that made this possible. The developers also guaranteed fans that the open beta offered only a mere glimpse into the bevy of content that's headed to the game once it's out

A lot of hardcore fans are still not quite sold on Modern Warfare 2 as a big step forward for the series but you can't deny that its numbers have been impressive so far.

Activision Blizzard has an embarrassment of riches as a company, but Call of Duty is having a down year, at least, relative to previous outings. After 2019's Modern Warfare boot set a new standard, the next two games, Black Ops - Cold War and Vanguard, failed to meet sales and critical expectations. The arrival of Modern Warfare 2 has been heralded as a game-changer and it looks like all of the hype proved to be true.

Now, Modern Warfare 2's beta launch wasn't perfect. Players had valid complaints and it even had cheaters. But, the numbers speak for themselves. Activision was right not to worry about Call of Duty's numbers going down.

The Call of Duty team had more than just congratulations to say in its latest post. It has also pointed out that Modern Warfare 2 (October 28) and Warzone 2.0 (November 16) will be released in quick succession followed by Warzone Mobile, which comes out early next year. The upcoming AAA mobile Call of Duty experience has already pulled in north of 25 million pre-registrations and is said to have been the fastest game to top 15 million pre-registered users for Activision, Blizzard, and King Mobile. Finally, those who participated in the beta are going to receive rewards for their participation once Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 becomes available to play.

We'd be surprised if Modern Warfare 2's online servers didn't end up crashing due to congestion for at least a day.

Speaking of rewards, pre-ordering the Vault edition of Modern Warfare 2 will get you a lot of additional bonuses on top of the early campaign access on October 20. Pre-ordering the highest-tier version of the next Call of Duty game will give other bonuses like the Red Team 141 Operator pack, FJX Cinder Weapon Vault, Season One Battle Pass, and 50 Tier Skips.
