With a little over a month away from the premiere of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel Studios decided to hype things up with a new and more extensive trailer for the upcoming film.
After releasing the film's first official trailer in October, Marvel stuck to its promise and dropped a new trailer for Ant-Man 3 at the College National Football Championship game between the Georgia Bulldogs and TCU Horned Frogs.
The trailer starts off with Kang offering to recover Scott Lang the time he lost being stuck in the Quantum Realm after the events of the blip in Ant-Man 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. We see Scott, Hope van Dyne aka The Wasp, and Cassie Lang all being sucked into the Quantum Realm after activating a device.
In the Quantum Realm, Kang offers to help Scott gain back time but also threatens to wipe out everything if he refuses. Ant-Man initially wants to work with Kang but ends up fighting against him.
During the trailer, we get a glimpse of two new characters in the villain M.O.D.O.K. and Lord Krylar. M.O.D.O.K is played by Corey Stroll who previously portrayed Darren Cross in Ant-Man. There are theories that Cross may have survived and was transformed by Kang into a cybernetic being.
Lord Krylar is the governor of the Axia community of the Quantum Realm and may have had a history with Janet van Dyne when she was stuck there. Lord Krylar is played by Bill Murray. The actor has previously teased that he is playing a villain in Ant-Man 3.
Audiences also get a preview of Kang’s massive army and his city called Chronopolis during the trailer. We assume that Kang built the city and grew a massive army while he was stuck in the Quantum Realm. And the "thing" that Kang is after will allow him and his army to travel and conquer the multiverse.
Interestingly, there is a device shown in the video that resembles the Ten Rings that Shang-Chi wears. It has the same glyphs are present in the Ten Rings, Ms. Marvel’s Bangle, and the Eternals’ ship called the Domo. This device may be the thing that connects Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, and The Eternals to the Multiverse Saga.
There have been theories that Scott Lang will sacrifice himself in Quantumania to save his family. The trailer hints at this as he mentions he doesn't need to win against Kang, he only needs for the both of them to lose.
Whatever happens in the film that will kick off Phase 5 of the MCU, it may be the rallying point for the Avengers to unite against Kang. Director Peyton Reed previously teased that the movie will have major repercussions for the entirety of the MCU.
"It's our third movie. It's this trilogy now," Reed said. "But things happen in this movie that are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently. And it's fun for us that Scott Lang is at the center of that change."
We'll find out just how much more of a threat Kang is compared to Thanos when the movie hits theaters on February 17.
