Deadpool 3 director quashes John Krasinski's return as Mister Fantastic

John Krasinski reacts to Hugh Jackman’s return in Deadpool 3, but director Shawn Levy quashes bringing him back as Mister Fantastic.

Riding on the coattails of the bombastic announcement that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine, John Krasinski responded with a cryptic tweet. Fans took it to mean that the actor would be returning as Mister Fantastic in Deadpool 3.

But is that the case? Well, someone has a definitive answer. Check out the details below for more.

When Ryan Reynolds posted on his social media the teaser that confirmed Hugh Jackman is coming back as Logan/Wolverine, John Krasinski responded on Twitter by asking if this is their movie.

While some fans assumed this meant Krasinski is reprising his role as Reed Richards in Deadpool 3, it is actually a humorous jab at a different movie. Krasinsiki is working on the film IF (Imaginary Friends) for Paramount Pictures as producer and director, which includes Ryan Reynolds in the cast.

Fans of the MCU have lobbied for John Krasinski to be cast as Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four. This came about after some comic book art had depicted the bearded version of the F4’s leader that looked like the actor. While this small but vocal group of fans were pushing for this to happen, Marvel Studios was mum on the matter.

John Krasinski as Reed Richards was a fan casting that was finally fulfilled in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

However, this fan casting was ultimately realized in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Along with returning actors Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Krasinski appeared as a version of Reed Richards as part of the Illuminati.

But while this did fulfill the fans’ wishlist, Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic and the rest of the Illuminati, were quickly dispatched by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and killed. On that note, a section of fans were quite disappointed that Mister Fantastic, the world’s smartest man, acted contrary to this description in the film, effectively sacrificing their advantage and leading to Black Bolt’s demise.

The definitive confirmation that John Krasinski is not returning as Reed Richards for Deadpool 3 comes from director Shawn Levy (Free Guy, The Adam Project) himself. Levy responded to Krasinski’s tweet with a simple "Sorry JK, this one’s all mine."

Still, this did not stop fans from pushing for Shawn Levy to include Krasinski’s Reed Richards in Deadpool 3. Levy’s tweet was followed by fans saying the director and Ryan Reynolds could make it happen if they want to.

However, Levy and Reynolds have not responded to these petitions. And John Krasinski himself puts the speculation to rest:

But is this a definitive conclusion that Krasinski will not appear in Deadpool 3? The production still has a long way to go before it releases to theaters. So the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine might not be the only surprise Ryan Reynolds and his Deadpool crew will have in store.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy confirmed Krasinski was just trolling and responded by saying “Sorry JK, this one’s all mine.”

After all, they confirmed that the Wolverine Hugh Jackman will play will not be the same as the character in Logan (2017). And so far, the only confirmed cast are Reynolds, Jackman, and Leslie Uggams (who is reprising her role as Deadpool’s landlord, Blind Al).

Deadpool 3 is projected for a worldwide theatrical release on September 6, 2024. Meanwhile, IF, starring John Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, Pheobe Waller-Bridge, Alan Kim, Fiona Shaw, Louis Gossett Jr., Cailey Fleming, and Bobby Moynihan will debut on May 24, 2024.
