Mark Hamill is no longer playing Joker

The long-time voice actor of the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't feel like lending his voice anymore after Kevin Conroy passed away last year.

Voice actors are just as iconic as their live-action counterparts, and some argue a certain few give characters more justice, like Mark Hamill, for example. Most might know him for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, but Hamill has also done plenty of voicework in the past.

If we're being honest, we're surprised Mark Hamill hasn't appeared as a live-action Joker yet.

Specifically, Hamill has been the voice of Joker for a handful of animated Batman shows, films, and even video games, often partnering with Kevin Conroy. But, now that his frequent partner has passed away, Hamill feels like he can't ever return to the role anymore.

Speaking to Empire, the tragic death of his longtime Batman co-star is giving him no choice but to hang the purple suit in the closet, saying:

They would call and say, 'They want you to do the joker,' and my only question was, 'Is Kevin Batman?' If they said yes, I would say, 'I'm in.' We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn't seem to be a Batman for me.

With over a dozen credits as Joker's voice actor to his name, losing Hamill is a huge blow for future DC Projects.

Mark Hamill's joker is iconic and will go down in history as the best among them.

If we've really seen the last of Hamill as Joker, then his last time to voice the iconic madman is in 2022's hit free-to-play platform brawler, MultiVersus. Keep in mind that Joker is no longer alive in the ArkhamVerse following the events of 2011's Batman: Arkham City due to excessive use of the Titan serum, which is a custom-made drug made using a combination of Baner's serum, Venom, as well as Poison Ivy's plants. However, Joker's psyche was very much alive inside the mind of Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, for most of the events of 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight.

Joker's death and subsequent psychological haunting in the original Arkham trilogy are key to the series' plot. Since Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League takes place in the same continuity, bringing Joker back wouldn't make sense.

If it's any consolation, Joker will continue to live on in future DJ projects. Case in point, Joaquin Phoenix will suit up again in his award-winning role alongside Lady Gaga in Joker 2, which premieres on October 4, 2024. Meanwhile, Barry Keoghan's Joker is expected to play a more significant role in Matt Reeves' budding BatVerse that will use the upcoming Penguin spin-off to connect the first film to its sequel. Finally, we're pretty sure James Gunn will squeeze in a Joker appearance as part of his ten-year plan for the DC Universe.

Following Mark Hamill as the voice of Joker will be a tough act.

As for Kevin Conroy, gamers can witness his final performance as the Dark Knight on May 26 when Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which may or may not have microtransactions, comes out.
