Secret Star Wars
Lucasfilm is pressing ahead with a secret Star Wars film and has hired Wonder Woman 1984 director to helm the movie.

Lucasfilm recently revealed it is creating a new Star Wars movie alongside other films. The company tapped Lindelof to develop the film and serve as one of the co-writers alongside the talented Justin Britt-Gibson, who wrote the script for three episodes of The Counterpart. Britt-Gibson also served as executive story editor on The Strain, a film produced by Guillermo Del Toro. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his involvement in the planned film. Now, according to Deadline, Lucasfilm has contracted Obaid-Chinoy to assume the directorial helm for the movie.

Deadline reports that Lucasfilm hired Obaid-Chinoy this early into production to ensure her directorial input influences the movie’s direction. However, Lucasfilm remains secretive about the movie with the plot, potential cast, proposed production schedule, and other details under wraps.

Disney and Lucasfilm have attempted to develop a new Star Wars movie since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. These projects have, however, been delayed or canceled for one reason or the other. In 2020, Lucasfilm announced that Patty Jenkins, who directed Wonder Woman 1984, would direct Rogue Squadron. The studio announced a December 2023 release for the film. However, the studio removed the film from its release schedule in September. Since then, it has solely focused on its television series with the exception of this recent revelation.

Secret Star Wars
While there have been numerous limited series, Disney hasn't released a film since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

Currently, Disney only has one Star Wars film on its roster. The film, which remains unnamed, is scheduled for a December 2025 release. However, the company has not officially announced production for any film for that date despite the fact that there are reports of three projects in development headlined by Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, and Rian Johnson.

Johnson recently revealed that the Star Wars trilogy he is working on with Lucasfilm will still happen. Apparently, the project is on hold due to scheduling conflicts, including the fact he is currently working on Knives Out 2. Nevertheless, work continues on its limited series and shows, including Ahsoka, Tales of the Jedi, The Bad Batch, and The Mandalorian, which are set to release within the next two years.

Lindelof is a screenwriter and producer who has worked on many big movie projects in Hollywood. He co-created and executive-produced Lost, the ABC hit drama series. He also created The Leftovers, the HBO supernatural fiction limited series, and Watchmen, the HBO award-winning superhero series. In addition, the Emmy-winning director has written several blockbusters like J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Marc Forster’s World War Z, among others.

Likewise, Obaid-Chinoy, primarily known as a documentary filmmaker, has worked on a variety of highly acclaimed projects, including 2012’s Saving Face, 2016’s A Girl in the River: The Prince of Forgiveness, and 2015’s 3 Bahadur. She won an Academy Award each for Saving Face and A Girl in the River. Recently, she directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, the 2022 superhero fiction limited series that aired on Disney+.

By the way, all Star Wars movies and series, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ob-Wan Kenobi, and more are streaming on Disney+. Also, fans of the franchise will be pleased to find out that Liam Neeson will be reprising his role as Qui Gon Jinn in a Star Wars spin-off.
