Fans are speculating that the LOTR studio is working on a new The Lord of the Rings game.
Fans are speculating that the LOTR studio is working on a new The Lord of the Rings game.

Weta Workshop made a name for itself with its work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit spin-off trilogy. Since then, the special effects and prop company has worked on other big franchises. Because of its pedigree, audiences are always on the lookout for Weta's next project. Now, it appears that Weta is working on a video game - not a movie. The studio describes its next project as something "very close to our hearts,", which is getting plenty of fans excited.

What video game is Weta Workshop working on?

Daedalic Entertainment is currently working on The Lord of the Rings: Gollum with a 2022 release date.

According to the job ad for a producer role, the Lord of the Rings effects and props studio is looking for a Game Producer that will report directly to their Managing Director and work closely with the Lead Game Designer. The advert adds that the role is for the studio's "next PC and Console game project with a major worldwide IP." However, Weta stopped short of confirming just what the IP is. This level of secrecy suggests that Weta is working on something big and it wants to keep the project under wraps for as long as it can.

Unfortunately, upon further investigation, we couldn't find another position that is currently open at the studio.

With that said, fans are speculating that the position is for another The Lord of the Rings game. At the moment, gaming audiences are looking forward to the release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in 2022. Of course, Weta has worked on several other big properties in the past as well.

In other news, Unity just purchased Weta Digital for $1.5 billion. Unity and Weta will reportedly work together to create a new metaverse.
