Jean Claude Van Damme is finally Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1

This comes decades after Midway's failed attempt to have Jean Claude Van Damme play Johnny Cage in the first Mortal Kombat game.

It's a bittersweet moment for fans who've been wanting to see JCVD join Mortal Kombat.

Talk about things going full circl. Jean Claude Van Damme is now a playable character skin for the upcoming Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 1.

The first Mortal Kombat game, which launched in 1992, featured 7 playable characters, who would later become an integral part of the franchise. One of them, Johnny Cage, bore a striking resemblance to Jean Claude Van Damme. At the time, Van Damme was high off of the success of several of his action films, including 1988's Bloodsport.

As it turns out, Midway planned to use JCVD as the actor for the character. After pitching the character to the actor, JCVD reportedly turned them down. Despite this, the studio continued with their initial plans to use JCVD's character from Bloodsport as the inspiration for the character.

Now, several decades later, Jean Claude Van Damme has finally agreed to be Johnny Cage.

JCVD's Bloodsport is one of the most well-loved martial arts films of all time.

Jean Claude Van Damme's Cage skin is part of the game's Kombat Pack add-on and it will come for free with the Premium Edition ($109.99) and Kollector's Edition ($249.99).

The standard edition of Mortal Kombat 1 will cost $69.99 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Windows PC, and the still-supported Nintendo Switch.

Van Damme isn't the only fighter part of the Kombat Pack. The DLC includes seven additional fighters and five Kameo fighters. However, unlike the other new characters, the Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage is available at launch. The rest will arrive weeks and months after Mortal Kombat 1 comes out.

After much speculation and teasing, Mortal Kombat 1 was finally revealed and it was bloody glorious. The game, which is a reboot of sorts following the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, will feature nine playable characters although this will likely be expanded on in the coming months.

As Mortal Kombat 1 will technically be set in the past, we're curious to find out how Johnny Cage plays a role in all of it.

We're hoping that The Muscles from Brussels has managed to rope in other action stars to join Mortal Kombat.

Jean Claude Van Damme might not be the only classic action star joining Mortal Kombat 11. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan the Barbarian is rumored to be part of the post-launch slate of additional characters for Mortal Kombat 1. The other rumored characters include Peacemaker and Homelander.

Speaking of Johnny Cage, Billy the Butcher's actor, Karl Urban, has reportedly been cast as Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel.
