DC Studios co-CEO and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has teased the appearance of the fan-favorite comic character, Krypto the Superdog, in the forthcoming film Superman: Legacy. Gunn did this during a recent interview alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy cast member Chris Pratt.

During a conversation with Pratt about how their time together going forward will reduce due to Gunn’s new job, the duo joked about Pratt joining the cast of Superman: Legacy as Krypto. In Gunn’s words, "I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto the Superdog (in Superman Legacy). You could do motion capture on set and walk around on your hands and knees, but you can’t talk."
Pratt, in his usual easy-going and humorous manner, responded "I’ll do Krypto but you have to pay me in crypto." Gunn would later state, "It is a scoop, I guess" seemingly confirming the news.
In the comics, Krypto the Superdog is a white dog from the planet Krypton and Superman’s companion. While the character has made several appearances in television series and animated films, Superman: Legacy will be its first live-action feature film appearance. The character made its last appearance in the animated film DC League of Super-Pets and was voiced by Dwayne Johnson.
Even though the little exchange between Gunn and Pratt confirms the character’s appearance in the forthcoming film, it doesn’t explicitly confirm that Pratt will play the role.
However, there is a possibility, especially since Gunn stated a few days ago that one, or more, of his Guardians of the Galaxy cast members will star in Superman: Legacy but stopped short of naming the actor(s) or actress(es).
Superman: Legacy is still in development although it hasn't tapped any cast member just yet. The reboot will follow the character in his earlier days as he tries to balance his two heritages.
The film's synopsis, revealed in March, states, "Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."
In other Superman-related news, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hinted at a new Superman game during an investors call in early May. Also, a new animated Superman series titled My Adventures with Superman unveiled its trailer last month, alongside its release window.
Superman: Legacy is slated to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
