Now that James Gunn has had a taste of directing an R-rated movie with The Suicide Squad, it appears that he's hoping to get a chance to do it again in the MCU after he finishes his work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Is a Drax solo MCU movie going to happen?
The 55-year-old director is perhaps best known for his work on superhero movies. In particular, the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy films, which have garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success.
His latest film, The Suicide Squad, is well on its way to becoming one of the best comic book movies of all time. So, it stands to reason that he'll have a bit more leverage than before if he decides to pitch either Warner Bros. or Disney his next project.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Gunn was asked about Marvel doing R-rated movies, to which he responded by saying:
I think they will, I think they will, I'm almost sure they will... Not 'Guardians' though, because 'Guardians' are family movies, so it's different. People are like, 'Finally, they let you do R rating. What would 'Guardians' be like if that was R-rated' I'm like, 'But it's not'.
He then followed this up by saying that a Drax solo film could go down the R-rated route. He added that he would love to direct that movie if it ever happened. However, this is more of a hypothetical than something that's actually in the works.
Phase four of the MCU already has its slate of movies planned out through until 2023, so if the Drax solo movie ever happens, it won't be until 2024 if not even further than that.
What makes it even less likely that a Drax solo MCU movie will ever happen is that the actor that plays Drax is already done with the character. Dave Bautista has said in the past that he doesn't want to play Drax anymore after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In addition to this, Bautista has talked about wanting to become the lead protagonist of a comic book movie, something that Marvel isn't keen on.
One role that Bautista has had his eye on is the Batman villain, Bane, who has yet to appear in the DCEU. But, then again, Bautista's mind might change if Disney greenlights the Drax solo movie.
In any case, if Disney does go the R-rated route, we doubt that it'll be with Drax. Deadpool is currently in development, and we feel like that's going to be Disney's best bet at making the first R-rated film in the MCU.
As for Drax, audiences will get a chance to see the stoic and merciless brute appear on the big screen once again on May 5, 2023, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is expected to start filming later this year.
