Is the fourth xXx film finally in the works?

After it looked like the fourth xXx film was all but happening, several factors have stalled the production on Xander Cage's next outing.

2017's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage grossed $346 million worldwide against an $85 million budget, which all but guaranteed a sequel. The talks of a potential fourth xXx film gained even more traction when D.J. Caruso, the director of the third xXx film, expressed his interest to work on it. At the same time, Vin Diesel made a move so that he had more creative control over the fourth film and future installments.

The first xXx film was one of the biggest surprise hits of the early 2000s.

However, while there has been news of positive developments regarding the fourth xXx film, it appears that we shouldn't expect to see it anytime soon.

Who is going to be in the fourth xXx film?

The future of the xXx franchise initially looked bright following the success of The Return of Xander Cage.

Despite voicing out his desire to return to direct the fourth film, D.J. Caruso's return isn't guaranteed. However, it hasn't stopped the studio from approaching several artists. For example, Jay Chou and Zoe Chang both reportedly signed on to join the fourth xXx film back in 2018. The former is best remembered for starring alongside Seth Rogen in 2011's The Green Hornet.

Of course, Diesel will also be returning to star in the fourth xXx film as its titular protagonist while also producing it. Reports also claim that Deepika Padukone will reprise her role as Serena Hunger, the former xXx agent who also plays the love interest to Diesel's Xander Cage.

It should already go without saying but much can still change between now and when the fourth xXx film starts development.

What's taking the fourth xXx film so long?

We probably shouldn't expect the fourth xXx film to premiere anytime before 2024 if ever.

Not too long after the third xXx film premiered, Vin Diesel's production company, One Race Films, announced that it had partnered with The H Collective to buy out the franchise from Revolution Studios. This effectively gave the Hollywood superstar full control over any succeeding films. Because of this, many expected filming and production to begin as soon as possible, but it appears that things aren't as straightforward.

In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of the xXx series is in limbo after Weying Galaxy sued The H Collective in 2020 for failing to live up to a previous agreement that would have given them the rights to future installments in the franchise.

Given that Vin Diesel has a busy schedule ahead of him, fans shouldn't expect the fourth xXx film to premiere anytime soon.

Production on Fast and Furious 10 (and 11) will begin on January 2022 with the film scheduled to premiere in April 2023. Meanwhile, Diesel also talked about the possibility of a new Riddick game and film earlier this year. This effectively means that he has put the xXx franchise in the backburner. At least, for now.

If it's any consolation, the Fast and Furious franchise is set to end after the next two films. So, who knows? Once Diesel is done playing Dom Torreto, maybe he can go back to playing as Xander Cage?
