- Invincible Season 2 is finally here with the first half to arrive in November and the second part in early 2024.
- Invincible's creator Robert Kirkman shares insights into the upcoming season and promises it will feel much bigger than the first.
- Season 2 will focus on the growth and evolution of the protagonist, Mark Grayson, as he matures and faces new challenges, including the looming threat of the Viltrumites and the introduction of the Coalition of Planets.
When Invincible, the adult animated superhero series by Robert Kirkman, arrived on Prime Video in 2021, it was to both critical and commercial acclaim. Following its resounding success, Amazon renewed the show for a second and third season but it will be almost two years before we get a concrete update on the show's progress.
We have less than two months to go until the new season debuts. Ahead of its premiere, Kirkman sat down with EW to talk about the show and what it offers over the first season. The veteran television producer and comic book writer revealed that the new season will feel much bigger than the first season with particular focus paid to the protagonist's growth.
Kirkman began with the words, "I think Invincible season 1 is a clear representation of what you're going to get from this show, but overall season 2 is going to feel much bigger than season 1."
He provided more context to this comment. He said, "The overarching story of Invincible that'll continue from season to season is about the growth and change that Mark goes through as he moves from a teenager into adulthood... and possibly even into old age. So in season 2, we'll see him maturing and growing up a little bit."
In Invincible Season 1, we witnessed our protagonist Mark Grayson come to the realization that his father, Omni-Man, is not the benevolent protector he appeared to be but is in fact the first of a race of supervillains, the Viltrumites, who have set their sights on planet Earth and its inhabitants.
Kirkman revealed that the threat of Omni-Man's people will come into play in Invincible Season 2. Given how Grayson struggled to keep up with his father, we are not holding out any hope for Earth.
Fortunately, there is a ray of hope for Grayson and for humans. The Coalition of Planets is an organization that opposes the Viltrumite Empire and they will make their entrance in Season 2. The new season will also introduce new villains and give prominence to other heroes besides Grayson.
With these factors coming into play, we begin to understand Kirkman's comment that the new season will feel bigger than the first. We also feel it will be more exciting and already can't wait to see it.
When Invincible Season 2 eventually arrives, it will have taken well over two years. Fortunately, fans will not have to wait so long for the third season to arrive. In July, Kirkman revealed that the voice recordings for Season 3 are ready. He also assured fans that the gap between Season 1 and Season 2 "will be the longest gap between seasons."
Invincible Season 2 will be split into two parts. Last month, Kirkman explained that they split the series this way both for narrative effect as well as production reasons. You can read more on that here.
Invincible Season 2's first four episodes will arrive on Prime Video on November 3.
