Insomniac Games is working on a Wolverine game for the PlayStation 5

The first-party Sony studio is working on Marvel’s Wolverine alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

James Howlett, otherwise more commonly known as just Logan or his superhero name, Wolverine, is finally getting the opportunity to star in a proper video game.

Does anyone care to guess who that man is?

As part of Sony’s September PlayStation Showcase, the console manufacturer dropped a brief announcement trailer that Insomniac Games is working on Marvel’s Wolverine. As the name suggests, the game will star the nearly immortal mutant with adamantium bones. Although not much of the game was revealed at the event, the fact that it is in development was more than enough to get fans excited.

What is Marvel’s Wolverine going to be about?

Insomniac Games has been making AAA titles for Sony for a long time. The studio is responsible for the creation of some of Sony’s early mascots like Spyro and Ratchet & Clank. Speaking of, the latter saw its latest installment, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, release to rave reviews with many commenting that the game was the first true showcase of the PlayStation 5’s next-gen capabilities.

In addition to their work on all-time platformers, Insomniac Games also developed two of the best superhero games ever in Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

TLDR; Marvel’s Wolverine could not be in safer hands.

The popular Marvel Comics character has had his fair share of time in video games. However, this is the first time that he’ll feature in his own game since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Unfortunately, the initial teaser trailer did not reveal much about Marvel’s Wolverine. However, a follow-up post on the PlayStation blog by Insomniac Games’ Ryan Schneider revealed how the idea came about. He explained that the studio wanted to work on a Wolverine game because of the “core similarities between Logan and Peter Parker. He added that “both heroes feel deeply compelled to defend people who are less able to do so.”

Brian Horton will serve as the creative director for Marvel’s Wolverine with Cameron Christian on board as the game director. The latter was also the game director for the spin-off game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

With that said, Insomniac Games will have a treasure trove of source material to use as inspiration for Marvel’s Wolverine. However, we’d love to see Insomniac Games do something unconventional. Lest we forget, Wolverine is hundreds of years old. Much of his life is relatively unknown to the casual audience. A video game adaptation (with a twist) of his little-known adventures and exploits would definitely do well. Of course, if Insomniac Games could throw in a Spider-Man cameo or two in Marvel’s Wolverine, that’d be great too.

Marvel’s Wolverine does not have a release date as of the moment. It appears that it will also be exclusive for the PlayStation 5. In the meantime, fans can look forward to playing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy by Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix on October 26, 2021. Wolverine will also be a part of the roster of playable characters for Firaxis Games’ Marvel’s Midnight Sun, which is set to release in early 2022.
