House of the Dragon Fans identify CGI mistake in episode 3

Despite an excellent performance in the visual effects department, House of the Dragon's VFX team makes a basic mistake.

Hbo Renews House Of The Dragon After Impressive Premiere

Since its release, House of the Dragon has garnered praise from critics and fans alike. Given its big production budget, stellar cast, and flawless directing, the series gives fans much to love. Unfortunately, even the best projects can be flawed and this applies to House of the Dragon, too, with fans spotting a CGI blunder in the recently released third episode.

The mistake was initially identified by Twitter user Sarah Capps and it involves Paddy Considine's character: King Viserys I Targaryen. In a previous episode, we learned that the king is battling with a mysterious illness that seems incurable. Also, earlier in episode 3, it was revealed that the disease resulted in the king losing two of his fingers. Naturally, the VFX team would need to maintain continuity by editing out the lost fingers in scenes that show his hands.

However, when the king hands a message to a soldier in a later scene, his ring and pinkie fingers are covered in green. This suggests that the VFX team did intend to edit the fingers out of the shot but somehow missed it.

At the moment, we cannot tell whether HBO will edit the scene and eliminate the mistake. However, if past occurrences are anything to go by, we expect them to fix the error soon. There was a similar error in the final Game of Thrones season where they left a Starbucks coffee cup on a table and didn’t edit it out during post-production. When fans discovered this goof, they protested and HBO digitally fixed the error within days.

However, given the team’s stellar work at rendering the dragons on display in the show, among other things, missing what would appear to be a basic piece of editing is a jarring occurrence to fans of the show. Nevertheless, House of the Dragon has performed exceptionally well and has been renewed for a second season. As a result, fans shouldn’t have a hard time forgiving the error, especially given its minor nature.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to the Game of Thrones. It is based on the George R. R. Martin book, Fire and Blood, much like Game of Thrones was based on the books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. It chronicles the Targaryen civil war that destroyed most of their dragons and marked the decline of the great house.

HBO has released a trailer for the upcoming episode 4 to tease fans and stoke their anticipation. From first looks, it appears the episode will focus on Prince Daemon. In other news, one of the show’s co-runners, Miguel Sapochnik, has stepped down from his role in House of the Dragon to pursue other projects.

House of the Dragon airs every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
