Horizon Forbidden West has had some recent controversies regarding the plot of its expansion, but this hasn't stopped the game from selling very well as Guerilla Games teases more adventures to come for the series' protagonist, Aloy.

According to Guerilla Games, the second mainline Horizon game has sold 8.4 million copies since its release, which takes the franchise to 32.7 million copies sold.
As per the studio's director, Jan-Bart van Beek, the figures are for the copies "sold through" to gamers as opposed to units shipped to retailers. This means that 8.4 million players have actually bought the game since its release.
Horizon Forbidden West was released on the PS4 and PS5 last February, with Guerilla Games recently releasing a PS5-only expansion, Burning Shores.
"Millions more around the world have discovered Horizon thanks to PlayStation’s subscription services and initiatives, including PlayStation Plus, and Play at Home," van Beek said. "All told, it’s a milestone we never imagined possible twenty years ago when we first started making games."
He adds, "Last of all, I’d like to share that we are so excited that Aloy’s adventures will continue. Her latest mission takes her to the ruins of Los Angeles in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, and we can’t wait for you to find out where she’ll go next."
Guerilla Games released Horizon Zero Dawn for the PS4 in February 2017. The studio followed this up with the PC port on August 2020. Sony claimed in February 2022 that the game sold over 20 million units, up from the 10 million that the publisher reported in February 2019.
The studio recently revealed plans to "expand the world of Horizon" with a new co-op project "featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look." Guerilla Games also said that it would still continue the "epic solo adventures" of Aloy, the protagonist of the series. Sony reportedly has plans for a trilogy of Horizon games.
Guerilla Games is also working on a PS5 remaster for Horizon Zero Dawn. In addition to this, there are reports the studio also stuck a deal with Lineage and Guild Wars studio NCSoft to develop a Horizon MMORPG. Finally, Sony has started the development of the TV adaptation of Horizon on Netflix.
