Hogwarts Legacy is the 11th game in Steam history to surpass half a million concurrent players and the eighth most-played game of all time on Steam. More impressively, it achieved this success on Valve's digital games distribution platform less than 48 hours after its official release, with a peak of 872,429 concurrent players in the last 24 hours. The buzz surrounding the title was evident from the early access numbers, with 490,000 players paying for the deluxe edition of the game, to get the chance to play it on February 8.

So far the controversial new Harry Potter game has surpassed the player count records set by free-to-play titles like Apex Legends and Warzone 2. On all-time lists, Hogwarts Legacy currently is inching closer to the record set by New World. Out of the direct competition in single-player-focused games, only two are ahead of it in the rankings: Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077.

Despite reports of issues with frame rate stuttering and crashing on PCs, the wizardry adventure was the second most-played game on Steam during the first full day after its release, falling short just behind Valve’s own FPS game CS:GO, which saw its own all-time peak of 1,320,219 concurrents set earlier in the day, mostly driven by the IEM Katowice event who’s final match is being broadcasted right now.

This means that after setting the record on Twitch for most concurrent viewers on a single game Hogwarts Legacy still has a long way to go. Some of the issues that have troubled players have been addressed in a day one patch by developer Portkey Games, and more info is being gathered by the hour on their bug reporting forums.
Outside of that, critics have nothing but positive things to say about the game, despite multiple outlets trying to cancel the game and anyone who tries to embrace it.
Xbox users were one of the first audiences to get their hands on this remarkable new IP, and they have notably excelled in it. The game is already available on PCs, Xbox Series X/S, and the PS5. The game will also be coming to Xbox One and PS4 consoles in April, followed by a Nintendo Switch release in June. To coincide with this, PlayStation is releasing a new limited edition Hogwarts Legacy Dual Sense controller. But this is not the infamous new Edge model, which offers a bevy of new features at the expense of shorter battery life.
