HBO Max has cast Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone in its planned limited drama series The Penguin, a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. She will star opposite Colin Farrell, who will play the titular character.
This development was revealed by Deadline. According to the outlet, Reeves, Farrell, Dylan Clark, Craig Zobel, and Lauren LeFranc will serve as executive producers. Apart from producing, LeFranc will also pen the show’s script and serve as showrunner while Zobel will direct the series’ first two episodes.
Sofia Falcone is the daughter of notorious gangster Carmine Falcone who met his demise at the hands of the Riddler in The Batman. In the limited series, Sofia will be going up against her father’s lieutenant, The Penguin, for control of Gotham. Milioti’s character Sofia Falcone was previously portrayed by Crystal Reed in the Fox television series Gotham.
Cristin Milioti is an American actress best known for her role as Sarah Wilder in the 2020 film Palm Springs. She had a minor role in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street as Teresa Petrillo Belfort. Milioti also has starred in the FX black comedy series Fargo, the HBO Max comedy series Made for Love, and the Peacock comedy mystery series The Resort. Milioti is also popular for portraying Tracy McConnell in the CBS show How I Met Your Mother.
Apart from The Penguin, HBO Max has two other planned spinoffs. The first, an untitled GCPD series, will be set before the events of The Batman. The series will follow a corrupt cop as he struggles to do the right thing. At the moment, the project is on indefinite hold.
The second planned spinoff is an untitled Arkham series. This project will be based on the Arkham State Hospital and will examine the history of the different characters that are related to it.
By the way, Warner Bros. Pictures still hasn’t greenlit a sequel to The Batman despite its resounding success at the box office. In other DC comics-related news, the director of Shazam! 2 recently revealed that the film is ready. Shazam! 2 is scheduled for a March 2023 release.
At the moment, little is known about the planned limited series. However, there are reports it will start filming in February 2023. Also, during a recent interview, Farrell revealed that the series begins about two weeks after the events of The Batman, which suggests that Gotham will still be underwater and undergoing lots of repairs.
