Gaming audiences are eagerly waiting for more news about Grand Theft Auto 6 as the rumors surrounding the upcoming GTA entry continue to swirl. The latest leaks suggest that the Rockstar Games title will put a multi-billion-dollar-sized hole in the wallets of Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive.
Yes, you read that right. GTA 6 is on track to becoming the most expensive video game ever made by a huge margin.
At the moment, the most expensive video game to develop is Star Citizen, which has already pooled more than half a billion dollars from its hardcore supporters. The next one up is Cyberpunk 2077 at $174 million. The other projects to be estimated to have cost their companies more than a hundred million in development costs are the likes of Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel's Avengers, and Final Fantasy VII, all of which spent multiple years in development.
But, GTA 6 has been in the works for at least a decade if not longer, and it's believed Rockstar has made several changes, which could explain why the budget has ballooned this high.
Not to mention, a recent report by the CMA explained that making video games these days cost several times more than at least five years ago. Plus, the estimated figure, as per Dexerto, could be the combined total of both the development and marketing costs.
Besides, it isn't like Rockstar is left wanting more cash though. The long-time GTA developers continue to pull in an absurd amount of revenue from GTA Online, which it can use to push the boundaries of what's possible in a video game even further.
With the money, Rockstar can turn GTA 6 into the biggest, most realistic, and most immersive entry in the franchise.
If the rumors are true, and GTA 6 does have a multi-billion-dollar budget, it represents the first game named that's part of the new age of games. It's a massive investment but it also represents that the industry isn't shy away from spending big to create entertaining games but also groundbreaking in their scope and sophistication.
With a record-breaking budget, an expansive map, and a potential release announcement soon, GTA fans have plenty to look forward to.
