Believe it or not, it's been nearly a decade since Grand Theft Auto 5 came out to the market. But, time hasn't slowed down the multi-platform gaming behemoth at all. As a matter of fact, the game's success has continued to this day as Rockstar Games has just reported that GTA 5 has sold over 180 million units in its lifetime.
Take-Two Interactive recently revealed the sales milestone for GTA 5. The game is still selling very well, shipping 5 million units in the last three months alone.
This news comes from the latest earnings report for Take Two which also mentions that GTA 5 reached over one billion dollars in sales "faster than any entertainment release in history." According to the report, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has reached a new milestone, selling over 400 million units.
GTA 5 has been very consistent in terms of sales numbers. The 5 million units sold in the last quarter are similar to the previous quarters' sales numbers.
The latest financial report also reflects on the first anniversary of the GTA+ subscription for GTA Online. The report labels the subscription service as a success but did not back it up with concrete numbers.
GTA 5 is a few months away from celebrating its tenth anniversary. While it is still racking up pretty good sales numbers, fans have been clamoring for a new GTA game.
The report also adds, "Active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway." The company did not give a release date for GTA 6, we have known for a while that Rockstar has been working on a new installment for the series. Last year, the studio suffered a massive leak revealing key details and gameplay elements for GTA 6.
There have been rumors that GTA 6 will be released next year. The report lends some credence to the rumors that the game will be coming late in 2024. The holiday season is one of the most lucrative periods of the year for gaming and a late 2024 launch for GTA 6 would make a lot of sense. All of the modern 3D games in the GTA franchise launched in the final quarter of their respective release years.
Aside from the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the Red Dead Redemption series has also experienced continued success. Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 53 million copies and is the second best-selling title in the US based on dollar sales in the last five years. The Red Dead Redemption series as a whole has shipped over 75 million units worldwide.
GTA 5 and GTA Online are available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
