Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, officially titled Grand Theft Auto Mission Pack #1: London 1969 and Grand Theft Auto: London Special Edition (aka GTA London '69 or simply GTA London), is the second entry in the Grand Theft Auto series as actually an additional mission pack to the first Grand Theft Auto game.

GTA London offered 32 brand new missions and 30 new vehicles. The expansion uses the same fundamental gameplay mechanics as the main game and is set in a fictionalized version of 1960s London.

Plot and location

As in the main game, the player assumes the role of a criminal who works for a number of London-based criminal organizations and complete levels by achieving a set number of goals.

The game is set in London, the capital of Great Britain in the United Kingdom, in the year 1969. As such, it and the second expansion are the only games in the GTA series to be set in a real world location. The second expansion Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 was later released with younger versions of the same characters introduced in 1969 and set eight years earlier in 1961.

Gameplay

Players will take on the role of a group of stylish young thugs looking to climb the career ladder of organized crime in London. There are a number of characters that the player can choose from, but all are functionally the same for the purpose of gameplay.

The gameplay is almost the same in the original GTA, including the dock cranes, Kill Frenzies, police bribe power ups, the Pay 'n' Spray service to change the paint job on your vehicles, and bomb-fitting garages. The weapons in GTA London 1969 are also identical in function and performance to the original GTA, with the fist, pistol, machine gun, rocket launcher, and flame thrower.

More than 30 new vehicles have been added with the GTA London 1969 expansion pack to the base GTA game. These include vehicles that were popular in London at the time, such as vehicles based on Minis, London double-decker buses, and black Hackney taxis. There were also models based on many famous British cars of the time such as Volkswagen Beetles, Bentleys, Jaguars, Aston Martins, and Rolls Royces.

Visuals and other features

The obvious difference is that the game has UK-specific features, like driving on the left side of the road and navigating the in-game menus makes a sound like the famous landmark Big Ben's bells. The weapons are represented by era-specific graphics on the HUD.

The voices used in the game are also UK themed. For instance, successfully completing missions will result in a Cockney-sounding voice saying “Nice one my Beauty!” to indicate completion.

If the player attracts too much police attention from committing crimes, the London police will go after him, identified by the police heads on the HUD, but instead wearing English bobby helmets. And if the player gets caught, instead of the usual BUSTED message, it will instead say NICKED.
