Lara Croft is one of the biggest names in all of gaming. After the tomb raiding heroine made her debut in 1996's Tomb Raider game, fans have seen her through numerous installments and reboots, as well as grace the big screen on multiple occasions.
However, with no new Tomb Raider game or movie released within the last couple of years, the heroine's presence has been terribly missed. Perhaps this is why Dream Cycle, a new game from the original designer of Lara Croft, recently received a lot of hype at Gamescom 2021.
What is Dream Cycle?
Dream Cycle is the latest game from Cathuria Games. Although that name might not ring a bell, you may know of Toby Gard, who was the original creator of Lara Croft. After his work on the "most successful human video game heroine", Gard dabbled in lesser-known properties. Now, with his own studio, Cathuria Games, Gard is looking to achieve the same success as he did with Croft.
As for what Dream Cycle is, the studio describes it as an "ever-expanding action adventure" that is set in a cursed alternate dimension where the protagonist will have to "save her soul and the shattered Dreamlands".
Unlike Croft, which is set in the real world, Dream Cycle is more of a fantasy action game. Instead of guns, the main character, Morgan Carter, will have access to magic and weapons, as well as stealth abilities. All of these will come in handy as Morgan attempts to rescue her soul.
What's next for Lara Croft?
Speaking of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft, there hasn't been a new Lara Croft game in what feels like forever. The last new installment to come out was 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider. If it's any consolation, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics did release Tomb Raider Definitive Survivor Trilogy earlier this year.
Even if the bundle did not come with new content, it made the trilogy more accessible to all players.
With that said, Gard will look to honor Croft's legacy with another female heroine in Morgan Carter. It'll be interesting to see if Gard can prove that he still has the creative chops.
More importantly, Dream Cycle will be one to keep an eye on if you're a fan of the Tomb Raider games. Because this is Gard's creation, Dream Cycle might immediately feel familiar with Tomb Raider fans once it's available at launch. Of course, it will probably be a while before we see that happen. But, with the promise of an ever-evolving adventure, the game should be worth waiting for.
