John Wick: Chapter 4 has been a huge hit, enjoying the biggest opening weekend in the John Wick series.
With the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, actor Donnie Yen has expressed interest in making a spin-off for his character. Yen plays Caine, a blind assassin and friend of Wick in the movie.
In an interview with Variety, Yen said "I'd love to do a 'John Wick' spinoff centered around Caine." When asked about the likelihood of the movie being made, the actor teased, "There’s always ‘talks’ in Hollywood."
However, the one thing stopping the martial arts star from going ahead with the project is scheduling. Yen and his wife run a media company in China which spans films, TV, and merchandise. The actor also works as a director, producer, and stars in projects.
We speculate that the plot of the spinoff for Caine would revolve around the origins of his character as well as how he and John Wick became "friends". It may also touch on his deal with the High Table and the circumstances surrounding his daughter.
Caine may also be dealing with Rina Sawayama’s Akira as the latter seeks revenge for her father’s death. In the post-credits scene of John Wick: Chapter 4, we see Caine visiting his daughter after earning his freedom. Akira then appears seemingly intent on getting her revenge.
John Wick spin-offs
While the spin-off starring Donnie Yen has not yet been confirmed, there are other projects that have already been greenlit.
Ballerina, the upcoming film starring Ana de Armas is currently in post-production. De Armas has been cast as Rooney, a ballerina, and young assassin that is seeking revenge for the murder of his family.
John Wick mainstays Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, and the late Lance Reddick will be part of Ballerina. Reeves recently said that he has a small part in the movie and revealed that the film takes place between John Wick 3 and 4.
A prequel TV series titled The Continental is also in the works. The upcoming spin-off will focus on the story of a young Winston and will be set in the 70s. The Continental will stream on Peacock, which has signed a multi-year deal for the show.
Ballerina is coming sometime in the spring or summer of 2024 while The Continental is set to premiere on Peacock later this year.
