- Director Shawn Levy teases that the upcoming fifth season will be on par with blockbuster films in terms of scale and depth.
- While Levy has big plans for the upcoming season, production has been paused due to the ongoing strike.
- Cast members feel torn about the final season, expressing a mix of excitement and sadness as the series concludes.
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of Stranger Things, although weirder occurrences have happened. While the production has been paused, the director of the wildly popular Netflix series gave fans a promising update.
Shawn Levy says that Stranger Things 5 will be as big as most blockbuster films we watch on the silver screen. In an interview with Total Film, the director opened up about the upcoming season and shared what fans should expect from the Netflix series.
"There's no way to be contiguous with season 4, and not, frankly, expand scale and depth," Levy said of the upcoming final season. "It's major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. Stranger Things 5 is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see."
The update will certainly be exciting for fans of Stranger Things as we wait for season 5, which is probably a year or two away from release. Filming of the blockbuster TV series is currently on hold amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
What we do know is that Vecna will be returning in the final season following the dramatic ending to season 4 and Noah Schnapp's Will Byers will reportedly be one of the major characters of season 5. The anticipation for the final season is at an all-time high for fans of the show but it won't be easy seeing it all end.
Long-time cast members also feel the same way about the end of the beloved TV series. In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, actor Joe Keery shared his bittersweet feeling about the conclusion to Stranger Things.
"It does feel like it's time. It won't be easy for it to end," Keery shared. "I mean, I owe my whole career to being on that show and all the opportunities that I had since are because of that show." He added, "So it's very convoluted."
"There's a sense of relief, there's a sense of sadness. I guess my goal is to just really soak it up as much as I can while we're doing it, and not take any of it for granted because it's been an amazing ride with such great people. And then once it's done, move forward and try to just hold on to the joy that we had when we were making it….Everything has a beginning and the middle and an end. It'll be nice to have the end of this too."
For actor David Harbour, what he looks forward to is seeing spin-offs for the show. He has said that he would like to see another star take on the role and later nominated Euphoria star Jacob Elordi to take on a younger version of Jim Hopper in a spin-off series.
"I think as soon as the show ends, or maybe six months before it ends, you'll be hearing about whatever spin-offs they have planned," Harbour revealed. 'At this point, I think Hopper is a character that can exist independent of me. If they wanna go back in time, forward in time… I'd love to see another actor play Hopper, and see what they can bring to it."
He later jokingly said of Jacob Elordi, "He could pull off being as handsome as I was at 20."
I stopped watching it after the second season. I guess I just lost interest.
If they end it where I think they are going to, it is going to be really epic! I am very excited to see the final season.
I don't want to see them go all spin-off crazy though
