Daisy Ridley open to reprising her Star Wars role

Ridley has confirmed her interest in reprising her role as Rey in the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars is one of the most successful media franchises in the world and almost no actor would pass up the chance for an adventure in "a galaxy far far away." This includes former star Daisy Ridley, who portrayed Rey in the sequel trilogy.

Daisy Ridley starred as the protagonist, Rey, in the final Skywalker Saga trilogy.

In a recent interview with IMDb at Sundance’s Acura Festival Village, where she discussed her new film Sometimes I Think About Dying, the 30-year-old actress revealed she is open to reprising her role in the franchise. She stated "I mean, I'm open to a phone call. I'm looking for employment!"

Ridley made her first appearance in the franchise in the sequel trilogy where she starred as the protagonist Rey across all three films. The trilogy’s three films, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker made up the seventh, eighth, and ninth films in the Skywalker Saga and, for all purposes completed the saga’s story.

Also created by George Lucas, the Ridley-led trilogy enjoyed massive success at the box office. Each of the films grossed over $1 billion and one of them even surpassed $2 billion. Given that the trilogy only cost $837 million, the three films’ combined gross of $4.4 billion was a massive return on investment - and that doesn't even include merchandise profits, which is where the real money is.

The final film in the trilogy saw Ridley’s character, Rey, defeat the villain Emperor Palpatine who also happened to be her grandfather. Following this, Rey went off to launch a new Jedi Order. Lucasfilm expanded on this storyline in 2020’s The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, where Rey starts to train Finn in the ways of the Force. However, Ridley did not reprise her role in the show.

The actress is still very much in love with the franchise and is open to reprising her role.

Nevertheless, it opens up the possibility for Ridley and, potentially, some other characters from the trilogy to return in future films, especially since Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the franchise intends to return to the main series’ timeline to further the story of the new characters.

While Lucasfilm is yet to start production on any film, there are several ongoing efforts to bring the franchise back to the big screen. Taika Waititi, the director of 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, is developing an untitled Star Wars film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Renowned filmmaker, Kevin Feige, is also reportedly producing a film set in the universe. Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Knives Out creator and former Star Wars director Rian Johnson, and Free Guy director Shawn Levy are other names that have been touted as heading up projects in the franchise.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise is currently focused on live-action shows, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Andor, and The Book of Boba Fett, all of which are set between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. Animated shows like The Bad Batch further round out the IP's content offerings.

The sequel trilogy was by all means a box office success, though it kicked up plenty of controversy.

With plenty of cameos by original trilogy actors throughout the sequel trilogy, and Ewan McGregor's reprisal of his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in character's own show indicate that Ridley's interest is not unfounded. If we really get more Star Wars content furthering the timeline, Rey is likely to play a significant role.

Apart from Ridley who played Rey, the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy’s ensemble cast included Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Anthony Daniels, Oscar Isaac, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Domhnall Gleeson, and Lupita Nyong’o.
