Cyberpunk 2077 Finally Returns to the PlayStation Store

Right when everyone's busy paying attention to everything that was announced at E3 2021, CD Projekt RED, the much-maligned studio behind the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 action RPG, just announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is finally going back up for sale on the PlayStation Store.

Cyberpunk 2077 still isn't fixed yet, but it's going to return to the PlayStation Store soon.

When Is The Cyberpunk 2077 PlayStation Store Return Date?

To say that Cyberpunk 2077 has had the worst launch in history wouldn't be an exaggeration. The game was initially a commercial success. Unfortunately, the backlash from the performance issues the game faced on its console versions continues to haunt CDPR to this date.

In an earlier article, we talked about whether it's still possible for CD Projekt to recover from this debacle.

We were of the notion that the studio will eventually recover. We just believed that it probably wouldn't happen within the lifetime of Cyberpunk 2077. At this point, the game doesn't seem to be fixable anymore. Of course, if CDPR can fix Cyberpunk 2077, then its road to recovery becomes clearer.

For this to happen, the studio will have to take care of something first. In particular, it will have to prove to Sony that Cyberpunk 2077 can run well enough on the PlayStation 4. It seems like CD Projekt RED has at least solved part of the equation.

Earlier this month, CD Projekt RED clarified that Cyberpunk 2077's return on the PlayStation Store is outside of its control. Fast forward to today and Sony seems to have given CDPR a much-needed break, albeit not without its caveats.

Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to be one of the best games of its generation. It's sad that performance issues prevented it from becoming what it could have been.

An announcement posted on CDPR's own website reads that CDPR is publicly disclosing the information of the "decision by Sony Interactive Entertainment to reinstate the availability of the digital edition of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation Store, effective on 21 June 2021."

An email from an SIE spokesperson that was later sent to multiple publications such as Engadget, IGN, and Polygon, states that Sony warns players not to expect any performance improvements on the base PlayStation 4. Thus, Sony recommends players to play the game on a PS4 Pro or a PlayStation 5.

At the moment, the only way to experience Cyberpunk 2077 on a PlayStation console is to buy a physical copy of the game.
