Previously, we reported that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty would be out in June shortly after a still-unnamed event. As it turns out, the DLC might be released in August.
The leak about the release window comes from Tyler McVicker, who's primarily known for leaking information about Valve. Last year, McVicker successfully revealed that the expansion would be at The Game Awards. Now, his latest leak hints at an August launch for Phantom Liberty with the confirmation possibly happening at the Summer Game Fest on June 8.
CD Projekt RED continues to keep details about the Phantom Liberty expansion closely guarded. For now, all we know is that it's set in a new district and will feature a new character, Reed, voiced by Idris Elba.
The expansion, touted as CD Projekt RED's most expensive to date, is exclusive to current-gen consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, as well as the PC.
Going back to the leak, we have a few words of caution. Though well-known for reputable information, observant fans have criticized McViker for peddling speculative information as if it came from a legit source. As a result, McViker now has a bad reputation in the gaming community outside of Valve leaks. It's also worth noting you could pick any date right now and say that Phantom Liberty would be released two months from then.
So, while McVicker has been proven to be a credible leaker (and the video is now private), the rumored August release date for Phantom Liberty remains doubtful, at best.
But, if it's any consolation, we are for the former. Why? Because August 20, 2023, marks an important date in-game.
August 20 is remembered as the day of the Night City Holocaust in Cyberpunk 2077. The event, to sum it up, refers to the Arasaka Headquarters Bombing that took place during the Fourth Corporate War.
Without delving too deep into Cyberpunk 2077 lore, the Night City Holocaust claimed a quarter-million lives and weakened the tight grip Arasaka once had on Night City. It would take Night City at least half a century to fully recover, and even then, this incident changed the lives of so many people, perhaps forever.
Ultimately, the only one who knows when Phantom Liberty is coming out is CD Projekt RED.
For now, all fans can do is to sit tight and wait for an official announcement. Although it wouldn't hurt to celebrate the new milestone achieved by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the series as a whole.
