For a while now, people in the gaming industry have been discussing game preservation and how to go about it. Although there's a case to be made for the preservation of incredible titles such as The Last of Us, some games are simply shovelware that needs to be canned. This brings us to CrossfireX.

According to a recent announcement from Remedy Entertainment, the first-person shooter game will be discontinued on May 18. The Xbox exclusive, which launched on February 10 of last year, will now be added to the ever-growing list of live-services games that have been discontinued, which also includes Epic Games' Rumbleverse and EA's Knockout City.

The single-player and multiplayer modes of CrossfireX will no longer be accessible after the shutdown. Additionally, effective immediately, the game will no longer be available for sale on the Xbox Store, and no new content will be added to the game. As of February 3, players who purchased the game within the last 14 days will qualify for a refund.

Coming to this decision was not easy, however, we can proudly say that our players have been amazingly active, passionate and enthusiastic in working with us to create a game that would be fun and enjoyable by all. We want to thank each and every one of our players for playing CrossfireX and being a part of this journey with us.

It is hardly surprising that the developers of CrossfireX have decided to shut down the game. Metacritic ranked it as the second-worst game of 2022, and most players criticized its poor storytelling, pacing, and bland characters.
Remedy Entertainment is currently working on several projects at the moment, including Alan Wake 2, Control 2, as well as a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2 for modern consoles.
