In case you didn't know, a new female heroine is coming to HBO Max.
The upcoming HBO Max superhero film, Batgirl, is set to revolve around the story of Barbara Gordon, who, in the comics and some live-action adaptations, took on the role of Batgirl, the lone female member of the so-called Bat-Family that includes Batman, Robin, and Nightwing, among others.
Before that happens though, the feature film needs to find its Barbara Gordon first and it seems like there is already some top contenders.
Who are the top contenders in the search for the Batgirl lead?
Testing for the Batgirl lead role has been going on for a while. Multiple reports place Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and Zoey Deutch (Why Him?) as either having already tested for the role or planning to test for it. However, these two stars are not the only ones who are rumored to be contenders.
The former is an American singer and songwriter who is set to star in the 2021 film adaptation of In the Heights, which is based on the Tony Award-winning musical of the same name by Lin-Manual Miranda. Meanwhile, the latter is known for her dramatic performances in 2017's Columbus and 2019's Five Feet Apart.
Considering that the film is still looking for its titular heroine, we shouldn't expect Batgirl to premiere anytime soon.
If it's any consolation, we do know some details about the Batgirl film. It will be directed by the pair behind Bad Boys for Life, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Meanwhile, The Flash's Christina Hodson was responsible for writing the screenplay. Other details such as cast members and plot are under wraps at the moment.
If you're itching for a superhero fix, you have a plethora of choices available to you right now.
On the other hand, DCEU's The Suicide Squad is set to debut next month. At the same time, Robert Pattinson's The Batman is expected to wrap up filming soon. Meanwhile, the standalone film, The Flash, as well as a sequel to Aquaman, are currently in development.
