Children of the Corn, the prequel-slash-remake of the 1984 supernatural slasher of the same name, finally has a trailer. The film originally premiered in Sarasota, Florida, in 2020. However, it couldn’t secure a wide release until January when RLJE and Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform, purchased the streaming rights and announced it will debut across cinemas on March 3.
Children of the Corn’s trailer, released to YouTube, shows a band of children taking over a town and imprisoning their parents. At the head of the gang is a ferocious young girl who seemingly inspires the others to inflict horrific injuries and murder with sickles, knives, axes, and clubs.
The film’s synopsis reads, "Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, twelve-year-old Eden recruits the other children in her small town to rise up and take control. Tired of having to pay the price for their parent's mistakes, Eden leads the kids on a bloody rampage, killing the adults and anyone who opposes her."
"With all the adults jailed or dead, it comes down to one high schooler who won't go along with the plan and becomes the town's only hope of survival. Based on the short story by Stephen King, CHILDREN OF THE CORN is a chilling new re-telling for a whole new generation."
Children of the Corn is based on Stephen King’s 1977 short story of the same name. While the original film mostly received negative critical reviews, it was a commercial success and grossed $14.6 million against a budget of $800,000.
The film inspired a franchise that has seen the release of numerous feature films, as well as a short film. It also gained a cult following and has featured heavily in pop culture in the intervening years since its release.
Children of the Corn remake stars Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey, Bruce Spence, Andrew Gilbert, Stephen Hunter, and Erika Heynatz. It was written and directed by Kurt Wimmer whose writing credits include Point Break, Total Recall, and The Misfits.
Children of the Corn is not the only Stephen King adaptation to arrive in cinemas this year. The Boogeyman, a 20th Century Studios film based on another Stephen King short story, will premiere on June 2, 2023. However, The Boogeyman will serve as a sequel to the literature rather than adapting it.
The Boogeyman was originally intended as a direct-to-streaming release on the streaming service Hulu. However, following a highly successful test screening, 20th Century Studios decided on a theatrical release after which it will head to Disney+.
Children of the Corn will debut in cinemas across the United States on March 3 and be available on streaming on VOD and Digital on March 21.
