Mortal Kombat has always been a titan in the gaming world. Since the franchise's debut in 1992, the series has captivated millions with its unique blend of riveting if controversial gameplay and a surprisingly intriguing storyline that, believe it or not, is actually interconnected across multiple reboots. Of course, the main highlight is the wide range of engaging characters, which Mortal Kombat 1 will also feature.
Despite being a pseudo-reboot, Mortal Kombat 1 won't feature the same 7 playable characters as the original game.
Following the earlier announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the following will be part of the release roster on September 19:
- Liu Kang
- Raiden
- Scorpion
- Sub-Zero
- Johnny Cage
- Kung Lao
- Kitana
- Mileena
- Shang Tseung (Pre-order DLC bonus)
If you're wondering where Jean Claude Van Damme is, he's a playable character skin for Johnny Cage - a character based on his portrayal of the lead in 1988's Bloodsport.
9 characters (8 if you exclude the pre-order DLC bonus) isn't enough to make Mortal Kombat 1 as memorable as its most recent predecessors, but don't worry.
Seeing as Mortal Kombat 11 had a total of 37 playable characters (25 in the base game, 2 of which are unlockable) and Mortal Kombat X had 24 at launch, Mortal Kombat 1 should feature just as many if not more.
At the moment, the three biggest names rumored to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 are Conan the Barbarian as well as Homelander and Peacemaker.
An earlier leak also claimed that Mortal Kombat 1 will reintroduce relatively obscure characters from the older entries. It's possible that this will happen via the new Kameo Fighter feature.
Make sure to keep an eye out for the latest announcements about Mortal Kombat 1 from NetherRealm.
The Warner Bros. Discovery subsidiary is expected to be a part of the upcoming PlayStation Showcase on May 24.
