Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 just posted more than $800 million in sales, in its first three days alone, after launching last week.

According to Activision Blizzard, Modern Warfare 2 holds the record for the "top-selling opening weekend" for the Call of Duty franchise. The reboot has surpassed its sequel and predecessor (try not to get confused), 2011's Modern Warfare 3.

@CharlieIntel posted a breakdown of the top-selling opening weekends in the history of Call of Duty. We've got to say, what Modern Warfare 2 has done is rather impressive.

Modern Warfare 2 (2009): $550 million in its first 5 days
Modern Warfare 3 (2011): $775 million in its first 5 days
Modern Warfare (2019): Over $600 million in its first 3 days
Modern Warfare 2 (2022): Over $800 million in its first 3 days

Modern Warfare 2 has done what only one other game has done over a weekend. Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V is the only other game to post more in its first three days on the market, with $1 billion in revenue during its launch weekend. Activision Blizzard used the global box office numbers from this year to put Modern Warfare 2's sales into context. Then again, when you've outpaced the combined total of the opening weekend box office of the two highest-grossing films of the year, Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, you're free to do what you want.

For what it's worth, Modern Warfare 2 didn't just post empty numbers. Modern Warfare 2 is actually good. The game hovers between 83% and 86% on Metacritic. It's not quite on par with the original game from 2009, but it's still pretty high. More importantly, the technical issues aside, Modern Warfare 2 is drawing plenty of praise from critics and audiences alike.

Most are in awe of the photorealistic graphics of the game, especially for the single-player campaign. As for the multiplayer, plenty are calling it the series' best entry in years, with a lot of gamers preferring it over the last Modern Warfare from 2009.

Regardless of how you look at it, there's no disputing how impressive Modern Warfare 2's numbers are. These are unbelievable numbers for a franchise believed to be past its prime.
