Ever since its surprise reveal, there has been much speculation regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. One of the latest rumors suggests that the upcoming title will not be what most fans expect, which would be a fairly big deal in one of the industry's most predictable IPs.
Recently, dataminers have uncovered that Modern Warfare 3 appears as an add-on to last year's Modern Warfare 2 on the PlayStation systems. This corroborates previous reports that the upcoming installment started out as an expansion for Modern Warfare 2. Activision maintains that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be a full premium release and will have a full price tag of $70.
Two Call of Duty content creators ProReborn and The Ghost of Hope have shared rumors that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is an "end of an era." The tweets have gotten the attention of fans following rumors about the upcoming installment.
"Just heard something down the grapevine about something that happened in CoD and the internet will be in shambles when it surfaces," ProReborn tweeted. "That's all I will say." Cryptic hype-driving messages are often shared for the sake of the all-powerful algorithm, of course.
The user adds, "Just a PSA and I'll say no more since some people are thinking this is a life or death thing. No, this is not a scandal, it's not a death, not something dramatic. It's just something that will signify the end of an era of our beloved game franchise."

No, this is not a scandal, it's not a death, not something dramatic.
It's just something that will signify the end of an era of our beloved game franchise.

The user has so far refused to elaborate on what the cryptic tweets meant. However, ProReborn made it clear that it was regarding real-world events and not related to the game's plot. This likely means it will functionally affect how consumers engage with the product.
Users on the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit speculate that Call of Duty will be transformed into a live service following the release of Modern Warfare 3. It would make some sense for Activision and Microsoft to start offering a live service instead of updates like Destiny 2 or Overwatch 2.
Others think that the cycle where one studio works on a title will no longer be done and all Call of Duty Studios will be working on the next installment. This is also very plausible since seven studios have been credited with the development of Modern Warfare 3. Sledgehammer Games led the development with all other Call of Duty studios in supporting roles.
Some users think that Activision will decouple Multiplayer and Campaign. The theory suggests that the studio will have a modular and iterative approach to multiplayer similar to how Warzone currently is. The solo campaign will then be separate and get a new title every 2-3 years.
These are all just speculation at this point. We will know about the upcoming title during the Modern Warfare 3 Global event tomorrow, August 17, 2023. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2023.
If this is the case, then what are they planning on doing after?
I am not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, I have not felt that a CoD release had felt the same for awhile but on the other hand, if they change it too much it will ruin the franchise.
CoD games haven't been the best so a fresh start will be good.
