Video game movies tend to vary in quality. Very few are ever truly great and the vast majority are forgettable. Far more are just a complete waste of time and not worth watching. The verdict is still out on the upcoming Borderlands movie, but the sheer amount of talent that's signed on to be a part of it is clear.
This is everything that's been confirmed so far about the upcoming Borderlands movie.
When Is the Borderlands Movie Premiere Date?
Claptrap really wanted to let you all know he made it down the stairs safely. That, and the production of #BorderlandsMovie has officially wrapped! See you at the theaters in 20 💣 💣 pic.twitter.com/69NFljVjDc

The Borderlands movie first started filming on April 1 and concluded on June 22, as confirmed by the Tweet from the movie's official Twitter account above, which means that the movie is one step closer to release.
Don't get your hopes too high up just yet though. All the post-production stuff like editing, reshoots, sounds effects, and all the finishing touches necessary to ensure that the vision of the film is fully realized could all take a few months to a year or more.
Factor in the COVID-19 pandemic and Borderlands movie won't premiere anytime before 2022.
Is There a Borderlands Movie Trailer Available?
Now that the movie has finished filming, we can expect a trailer to drop anytime though. Circle back in a few months and we might have a trailer to show.
Who Is the Director of the Borderlands Movie?
Prominent horror film director, Eli Roth, was brought in to help direct the Borderlands movie. Although a surprising choice, it makes sense to bring someone with a penchant for gore to try and bring some of the more brutal aspects of the Borderlands video games to life.
Craig Mazin, of HBO's Chernobyl fame, will be the one responsible for writing a script that will help translate Borderlands' colorful cast of characters to the big screen. Coincidentally, Mazin is also working on another video game adaptation in HBO's The Last of Us.
The Borderlands movie also has the full backing of three studios in Lionsgate, Arad Productions, and Picturestar with 2K's CEO Strauss Zelnick and Gearbox's founder Randy Pitchford both serving as the executive producers.
Who Are the Borderlands Movie Cast Members?
Unusual doesn't even begin to describe the cast of Borderlands. Playing as Lilith is none other than the versatile Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok and The Lord of the Rings) with Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence and Jumanji) joining the cast to portray the super-soldier Roland. Patrician Tannis will be played by none other than Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween and Freaky Friday) with Jack Black (School of Rock and Nacho Libre) lending his talents as the voice of Claptrap.
Here is a complete list of all the characters for the upcoming Borderlands movie:
- Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
- Benjamin Byron Davis as Marcus
- Cate Blanchett as Lilith
- Charles Babalola as Hammerlock
- Cheyenne Jackson as Jakobs
- Édgar Ramirez - Atlas
- Gina Gershon - Moxxi
- Jack Black - Claptrap
- Jamie Lee Curtis - Tannis
- Janina Gavankar - Commander Knoxx
- Florian Munteanu - Krieg
- Kevin Hart - Roland
- Steven Boyer - Scooter
- Ryann Redmond - Ellie
"Diverse, versatile, and weird" seem to be the words that best describe the upcoming Borderlands movie's cast of characters. However, you could say the same for the characters in the Borderlands movie, so the vast range of actors that have signed on for the movie might just work perfectly.
How Many Borderlands Games Are There?
While video game movies are definitely aimed towards fans of the games that they are based on, that doesn't mean that everyone who ends up enjoying the movies is a fan of the games.
If you're new to Borderlands, we definitely recommend playing through the games.
The cel-shaded graphics might take some time to get used to, but if you like shooters and looters like Outriders and Diablo, the Borderlands games might be just right up your alley. So far, there are four Borderlands games available: Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Borderlands 3.
A spin-off featuring Tiny Tina is expected to release in Early 2022.
