Bloober Team confirms Layers of Fear release window

Bloober Team's narrative-focused psychological horror franchise has been praised by fans and critics alike.

Bloober Team has unveiled the release window for Layers of Fear, the third installment of its similarly titled horror series.

Bloober Team has revealed that Layers of Fear will arrive in June.

The Polish video game developer provided this update in a teaser trailer it released during IGN Fanfest last weekend, where it stated that the title will debut in June. The trailer also confirmed the name change from Layers of Fears to the original game’s title Layers of Fear.

According to the series' official Twitter account, developers had used the word Fears instead of Fear to stress the fact that the title is based on the original Layers of Fear games, except it has new plotlines that connect every part of the franchise. It continued, "However, we received feedback from our fans who loved the original name. And we've decided to get back to the roots."

While the trailer did not reveal anything about the upcoming Layers of Fear apart from the release window and name, the overview on its Steam page revealed that the title will incorporate the story of every content in the franchise, ranging from the original Layers of Fear to Layers of Fear 2 and including the downloadable contents like Inheritance and The Final Note. It will also incorporate The Writer’s new story.

Also, the game’s synopsis on YouTube reads, "Layers of Fear (2023) is the crowning work of the Layers series that features 2016's Layers of Fear, along with its expansion "Inheritance" and the later sequel Layers of Fear 2. Experience new game mechanics, new scares, and a new chapter titled "The Final Note" that expands on the story of the original Layers of Fear through the perspective of the antagonist, the Painter's wife."

Unlike its predecessors, Layers of Fear employs advanced technologies that improve game mechanics and translate into a better gaming experience. The title is developed with Unreal Engine 5, 4K resolution, ray tracing, and HDR support for the best visual impact and most immersive experience, making it appear as realistic as possible.

Bloober Team originally announced the Layers of Fear game at the Not-E3 2022 press conference that took place last June, promising it will arrive in early 2023. At the time, Piotr Babieno, Bloober Team CEO, revealed plans to recreate the original titles using Unreal Engine 5 as it will provide an improved experience for players.

The game was originally titled Layers of Fears before the studio changed the name due to fan complaints.

Babieno further stated the group didn’t intend to make the new entry into "a simple collection of two remastered games," which prompted it to employ a different approach. In his words, "We are bringing back a franchise that is really special for us, in a new form that will give players a truly fresh gaming experience and that will shed new light on the overall story."

In other news, Bloober Team announced last year an adaptation of The Medium for the small screen. At the time, the studio didn’t have a home for the show, although there were speculations that it will head to Netflix.

Bloober Team is currently working on the Silent Hill 2 Remake in partnership with Konami. The game is rumored to release sometime this year.
