John Wick spin-off Ballerina gets a 2024 release window

The John Wick spin-off, starring Ana de Armas alongside a returning Keanu Reeves, will arrive in theaters by next spring or summer.

Lionsgate recently gave an update for Ballerina.

John Wick: Chapter 4 received critical acclaim from critics and fans. With the fourth John Wick movie doing extremely well, fans cannot help but be excited for Ballerina.

The John Wick spin-off movie starring Academy Award nominee Ana de Armas started filming in November. Fans of the John Wick universe have been wondering when the movie would be released in theaters.

Speaking with Deadline, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake revealed when fans can expect the John Wick spin-off. According to Drake, the movie is coming in 2024, sometime during the spring or summer.

The Lionsgate executive also shared that the studio is not ready to let go of John Wick. Drake teased that they’re "not ready to say goodbye" to Reeve’s character.

"We’re not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise," Drake said. "It’s what alternative there will be."

John Wick’s role in Ballerina

John Wick will have a small part in Ballerina.

John Wick actor Keanu Reeves recently talked about his role in Ballerina with Entertainment Weekly. The actor revealed that the master assassin has "a small part to play" in the upcoming spin-off.

Reeves shared, "Yeah, I got to work with Ana de Armas and the director Len Wiseman, and they had a great script, and John Wick has a small part to play in it."

The John Wick star also revealed the timeline for Ballerina. According to Reeves, the movie takes place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

"Len Wiseman was cool," Reeves shared. "He was like, 'Where do you want to pitch this story in [the] timeline?' So, it takes place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the 'John Wick' stories. It was fun to put the suit back on."

Ballerina's importance in the John Wick Universe

Rooney may be the successor to John Wick.

Ballerina will be important to the John Wick series as it keeps fans interested in the series while director Chad Stahelski takes a break. The director revealed that while he is interested in returning to direct John Wick 5, he wants some time off to work on other projects.

Stahelski is set to direct the live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima and an upcoming reboot of the Highlander series.

Lionsgate may also be looking at Ballerina as the successor of the series after John Wick 5. Ana de Armas’ character Rooney will be central to the franchise once John Wick finally retires.

Ballerina will be the final appearance of John Wick series mainstay Lance Reddick. The actor passed away at the age of 60 last week. Reddick completed the filming of the movie before his passing.

Ballerina wrapped up filming last February and is currently in post-production. The movie will premiere sometime in the spring or summer of 2024.
