Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time. Now, it's going to become a video game. At least, a proper one and not the 2009 third-person action-adventure video game adaptation by Ubisoft that served as a prequel to the movie that was released in the same year as James Cameron's film.
Coincidentally, Ubisoft, the world-renowned publisher that's known for the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, will be returning to make the new Avatar game.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was first announced publicly at E3 2021. Just like the first Avatar movie and game, the upcoming action game will take place in Pandora. It will put players right in the middle of the raging conflict between the native Na'vi and the human invaders who seek to take their land away from them.
There's still a lot about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora that we don't know yet. However, one thing is for sure: the game is a great way to drum up hype for the slate of Avatar movie sequels coming up, especially the first one, which is expected to release the same year as Frontiers of Pandora in 2022.
If you're thinking that Frontiers of Pandora is looking a lot like Far Cry in an alien world, then you're not alone.
Read on below to find out everything there is to know about Ubisoft's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Is There an Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Trailer?
That an Avatar game was in the works is an open secret within the video game industry. What most didn't expect was that a trailer was ready or that it was expected to release just a year after it was revealed.
The Frontiers of Pandora trailer gave audiences their first look at the world of Pandora in all its next-gen glory. Suffice to say that Pandora has never looked any better, putting the 2009 film's visuals to shame. Everything, from the foreign creatures to the thriving local wildlife, looked peachy and luscious. However, not everything is all good in Pandora as humanity's Resources Development Administration (RDA) is looking to threaten the foreign world and everyone who gets in their way.
Make sure to check out the trailer above to see just how beautiful Pandora is and how bloody the conflict between the RDA, as well as Na'vi, are going to get.
When is the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Release Date?
Frontiers of Pandora was arguably the biggest surprise of the Ubisoft Forward showcase at E3 2021. Unfortunately, while many details about Frontiers of Pandora were revealed, a solid release date or window was not one of them. All that we know is that Frontiers of Pandora is expected to release in 2022.
Considering that the Avatar movie sequel was pushed back to December 22, 2022, from its original December 2021 premiere date, Frontiers of Pandora might also release around the same time.
Which Platforms Will Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Release On?
If it wasn't already made clear by the visuals, Frontiers of Pandora will be a next-gen exclusive title. It will release only on the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5, as well as the PC. Surprisingly enough, Frontiers of Pandora will be launching on the Amazon Luna and Google Stadia.
What’s the Gameplay of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Like?
The first-ever reveal trailer of Frontiers of Pandora was light on gameplay details. However, if you pay enough attention to it, there are some tidbits of potential gameplay information that you can take away from it.
For one, certain parts of the trailer were played in a first-person perspective. This suggests that the game could either be an FPS title like Far Cry or it could also have multiple gameplay perspectives. We also saw a glimpse of mounted combat or, at the very least, an option to ride a mount to travel around Pandora as we see a Na'vi native riding on top of the planet's version of what looks like a horse.
Speaking of horses, Frontiers of Pandora looks like it's going to introduce a mix of creatures that we've seen in the film, as well as new ones. Other important details from the trailer include a central hub of sorts that hints at online play and possible customization options.
One thing that is made clear from the Frontiers of Pandora trailer is that the Na'vi will be taking on the RDA. Similar to the film, it looks like the RDA will stop at nothing to destroy Na'vi's homeworld and lay claim to it. The trailer showcases RDA's full-on assault using helicopters with the Na'vi fighting back in their own relatively primitive but equally dangerous ways.
Who Are the Developers of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora?
Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment studio, in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney, will spearhead the development of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Massive Entertainment is best known for its work on Tom Clancy's The Division and its sequel, Tom Clancy's The Division 2. Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Düsseldorf will be providing Massive Entertainment some assistance with the development of Frontiers of Pandora.
