You can find several magical beasts roaming the wizarding world of Hogwarts Legacy. These beasts can be captured and saved in your Room of Requirement once you unlock the Vivarium in your room. This is possible once you've completed the main story quest, 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.'

During the quest, Deek, the house elf, will give you the necessary spells to capture, feed, and clean the magical beasts. You will go through a complete tutorial on how to capture the beasts. It is as simple as conjuring and pressing the on-screen buttons when prompted, while staying within a certain range of the beast you're capturing.
In this guide, we've covered everything you need to know about magical beasts, how to capture them, the Vivarium, how to breed them, and why they are so important in Hogwarts Legacy.
Vivarium
The Vivarium is where you will house and care for all your magical beasts. You will get one Vivarium at first after completing 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom' main story quest. But you can get up to four Vivariums as you complete more Deek story quests. You can initiate the quests by speaking to Deek in the Room of Requirement.
Having more Vivariums is useful as you can have more magical beasts, which results in a better output of materials needed to upgrade your gear. So, prioritize completing the quests Deek gives at the earliest. These quests are also important as they unlock features such as breeding beasts and a quest-exclusive magical beast Phoenix.
There are four main quests given by Deek, including 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom' and they are as follows:
- The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.
- The Plight of the House Elf.
- The Foal of the Dead.
- Phoenix Rising.
Capturing Beasts
After completing 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom' main story quest, you can capture different magical beasts in the open world. Deek will teach you the spells needed to capture the beasts. You can go to any of the beasts' dens to find multiple of the same beasts in a specific area and cast your spell to capture them.
The best way to capture the beast is to use one of the control spells, such as Arresto Momentum, Glacius, or Levioso. Using one of these spells will either slow the beast down or freeze them in place, depending on what spell you use. You need to be closer to the beasts to capture them.
Once the beast is in place, quickly switch to your Nab-Sack spell and cast it on the beast to initiate a small mini-game to capture them. You need to press the on-screen button when the game prompts. It is usually the interact button: Square on PS5, X on Xbox, and F on PC.
After capturing the beast, return to your Room of Requirement and enter one of your four Vivariums and release the beasts in the Vivarium where you can take care of them.
Breeding Beasts
To be able to breed beasts, you must complete 'The Foal of the Dead' quest given by Deek. This is the third Deek quest. If you have a male and a female version of a beast, you can purchase and conjure a Breeding Pen in your Vivarium to breed them and get a third beast of the same type. It will initially be an offspring but eventually, grow into an adult beast.
To conjure a Breeding Pen, you first need to purchase the Breeding Pen spellcraft from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade.
Once purchased, return to your Room of Requirement and enter one of your Vivariums.
Interact with the Breeding Pen and select the beast you want to breed.
Upgrade Materials
The magical beasts in Hogwarts Legacy play a vital role in making your character strong. If you want to become a powerful wizard, you need to upgrade your gear, and materials collected from these beasts are used in upgrading your gear.
You can collect a beast-specific item when you feed and clean your beasts. You will see the image of the item on them once they've been fed and cleaned.
You can use the Loom in your Room of Requirement to upgrade your gear (face wear, gloves, cloak, dress, etc.), and the materials you collect from these beasts are used as "ingredients."
Once you've collected the materials from the beast, you need to wait 25 minutes in real time before you can collect the materials again.
The beast materials are also used to add traits to your gear. There's only one beast material used for that, and that's Kneazle Fur obtained from Kneazles. But the rest of the upgrades can require multiple beast materials. So, ensure you have at least one of every type of beast in your Vivarium.
If you do not have the required beasts, you can go to the Brood and Peck shop in Hogsmeade to buy beast materials or sell captured beasts for profit. Brood and Peck unlock after you complete 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.' Selling your beasts is a great way of earning Galleons in the early and late game.
All Beast Locations
There are a total of 13 beasts in Hogwarts Legacy, including one quest-exclusive magical beast obtained after completing the last Deek quest called 'Phoenix Rising.' You can find the beast dens all over the map. The beast dens are marked on your map when you first visit them.
They are not shown on your map if you haven't visited them in the first place. But you don't have to worry as we show you the locations of all the beast dens you can visit to capture your first beast of every species. You can find more than one den, but we are showing the locations closer to Hogwarts Castle, so it is easier for you to capture them at the earliest possible after completing 'The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom' main story quest.
Mooncalf
The Mooncalf den is found directly north of the Quidditch arena. Note that the Mooncalf only spawns at night time. If it is not nighttime already, go to your map and wait once to turn it into night time and the Mooncalf will spawn.
Puffskein
Puffskein can be found all over the map. In the North Hogwarts Region, you can find one early den north of Hogwarts Castle.
Niffler
The Niffler is everyone's favorite beast and can be found in North Hogwarts Region.
Unicorn
In the Forbidden Forest, the Unicorn den is located east of Upper Hogsfield Hamlet.
Jobberknoll
A Jobberknoll beats den can be found in the North Ford Bog region.
Giant Purple Toad
Going north from the Jobberknoll den, you will find a Giant Purple Toad den in the North Ford Bog region.
Thestral
Fortunately, Thestral beast den is also nearby. Go east from the Giant Purple Toad beast den, and you will find a Thestral beast den covered in green-tinted fog.
Kneazle
Kneazle is one of the most important magical beasts, as it helps apply level-three traits to your legendary gear. You can find a Kneazle den in the eastern section of Hogwarts Valley.
Hippogriff
Although you get a Hippogriff mount after completing The High Keep main story quest, you can still capture more of these to keep in your Vivarium. You can find a Hippogriff den in the Feldcroft region.
Fwooper
A Fwooper den is located east of the Hippogriff beast den in the Feldcroft region.
Diricawl
A Diricawl den can be found in Hogwarts Valley.
Graphorn
Graphorn is located in the southernmost part of the map in the Clagmar Coast region.
Phoenix
The Phoenix is a quest-exclusive beast. You only get one of them and a new Vivarium themed around it.
It is the last Deek quest, after which you get the Phoenix.
That concludes our complete guide on the magical beasts of Hogwarts Legacy.
