American television network ABC has renewed the mockumentary sitcom, Abbott Elementary, for a third season. Craig Erwich, who serves as president of ABC, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, announced the renewal at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour.
ABC’s announcement of Abbott Elementary’s renewal came after the television comedy series won big at the latest Golden Globe Awards.
Abbott Elementary follows a group of dedicated and passionate elementary school teachers as they attempt to provide their students with the best possible experiences even though their school is underfunded and mismanaged.
The first season of the series debuted on December 7, 2021, to rave reviews. It had a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 98% which the second season beat by garnering a rating of 100%. Abbott Elementary is ABC’s most popular show with over 9.1 million average viewers tuning in to watch the show across different platforms. This number depicts an audience growth of 13% over the show’s first season, bearing witness to its popularity and audience appeal.
Abbott Elementary features an ensemble cast that includes Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, and William Stanford Davis. They star as Janine Teagues, Gregory Eddie, Jacob Hill, Ava Coleman, Barbara Howard, Melissa Schemmenti, and Mr. Johnson respectively.
By the way, Brunson serves as one of the show’s executive producers, alongside Justin Halpern, Randall Einhorn, and Patrick Schumacker. She is also the creator and is credited with writing the script for several of its episodes.
At the 80th Golden Globe Awards held a couple of days ago, the show won the award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Also, Brunson won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy while Williams won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series.
One more thing, the Golden Globe Awards are not the only prestigious awards that the Abbott Elementary show has won. In 2022, it was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards of which it won three. The show also has multiple nominations for Critics Choice Awards as well as Screen Actors Guild Awards. However, since those events haven’t occurred, it remains to be seen whether it will win some of the awards on offer as well.
Abbott Elementary airs on ABC every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET.
