The Resident Evil franchise has seen massive success over the years, and the recent remakes of the popular classic Resident Evil games have proven that the hype for the franchise is still at an all-time high. The most recent remake of Resident Evil 4 was received extremely well with overwhelmingly positive fan reviews.
While the games, and remakes of the older games, have been extremely successful, the same cannot be said for the film adaptations of the same. Indeed, the original feature films directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, starring Milla Jovovich, were well-received. Still, the TV and film adaptations following the series of films from Anderson didn't do as well as one would expect.
The whole franchise has seen at least two reboots within the last two years alone. In 2021, Johannes Roberts' feature film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was released, which is not connected to the original Resident Evil in any way. The film did not do well, and there are no signs of a sequel.
A Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil was released the following year, starring some notable actors, including the late Lance Reddick. However, the series has been canceled with no signs of its reboot. Unfortunately, none of the movies could live up to the success that the original Anderson films garnered.
According to the latest rumors and an exclusive report from Geek Vibes Nation, Resident Evil is getting yet another live-action reboot titled Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. The name might sound familiar to long-time franchise fans as it shares it with an on-rails light gun shooter video game released in 2007.
There are no plot details, but the movie is reportedly in active development with Paul W.S. Anderson as the film's producer. There are no details about the director either. Given the success of the Anderson films in the past, the hype and excitement surrounding this rumor are not to be taken lightly. Could this reboot finally be the theatrical reignition of the Resident Evil franchise?
The film's title is the same as the 2007 video game, but if the film's plot is anything like the video game, then it could be a shortened anthology of the events that take place in Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The film might include the key scenarios from all three games or have a completely new plot. There's little to no information about the plot at this time. The rest is up to speculation until we get an official announcement.
