Prior to the Necromantic Wars The Shadow Legion was strictly a cult of night dwellers, feeding off the weak and unprotected. They grew in power as they grew in their connection to Shar. Eventually members became intrigued in the darker side of magic and necromancy. Their leaders created the Black Circle to lead them in their rituals and macabre experiments. Eventually this elite group of devoted clerics took over leadership of The Shadow Legion. They became the mind that controlled the limbs of their followers.
The Black Circle, although novices in their trades, understood many intricate rituals.
The Black Circle performed ceremonies on slave women to imbue spirits to their unborn children, using general members under The Shadow Legion to bring in sacrifices and subjects for the rituals. This practice commonly ended in miscarriage or hideous birth defects - and always the death of the mother. The process of the ritual is excruciatingly painful. Long thin knives are inserted under the skin, and then...
