Roberto Clemente Day

Roberto Clemente is an icon in Major League Baseball history. His number 21 is retired by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team he played for his entire eighteen year career. His accomplishments include 12 All-Star appearances, 12 Gold Gloves in Right Field, 2 World Series Championships, a World Series MVP Award, and the 1966 NL MVP Award. Clemente was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973 for his great work on the field, becoming the only player to make the Hall of Fame without the mandatory five year waiting period. However, Clemente is still celebrated today because the work he did off of it.
Clemente was heavily involved in charity work, primarily in his native Puerto Rico and other Latin America countries. On December 31, 1972, Clemente was on-board a flight that never made it to Nicaragua. He was on route to provide aide in the recovery after a horrible earthquake ravaged the country.
