Reader's Night - More than onc...
Rogan (rogz) @ 2008-02-22 11:26 AM PST
It's been mentioned to me on a number of occasions that more reader's nights would be preferable. In particular people have shown an interest in playing more than just one game. CSS and TF2 were brought up on a couple of occasions.

Anyway, there isn't enough space in the Gameserver section to fit all this stuff in, so I thought maybe we could do them in a more impromptu manner over X-Fire.

I suggest X-Fire instead of Steam Groups because Steam only covers a very limited umber of games, and the server browser doesn't work for non-Valve games such as ET:QW or CoD4, even though they are available on steam.

The way I suggest we go about this is thus:

1) Download X-FIRE and make an account: http://www.xfire.com/register/
2) Log into the web page and find the CPC group: http://www.xfire.com/clans/invisibledanger/
3) Click the Apply To Join button on the Right Hand side of the page
4) Await acceptance by an admin (This should take less than a day, but you never know)
5) Use the supplied X-FIRE forum to decide what we play, when and where.

As far as the games go I see no reason why we can't hop onto a server provided by one of us (ie not one of the official servers) as long as it's a decent dedicated machine. I can provide a few, like a 32 player TF2, but if it's CoD4 or CSS it should be held on one of the two official servers.

If the provided server is likely to be full of regulars (its not ours) it should be passworded to let us get on, and then if the server isn't full in half an hour the password should be removed to aid player numbers. This means it's better if we use a server which normally lies dormant as then we would have no need of a password to make sure all of us can get on.

We'll need admins/mods for the group, probably one per game type so they can schedule a night to play. Only the first Wednesday of every month is taken so far, so there shouldn't be any problems allocating slots for new games.

We'll start off with a maximum of one per week for any one game, and as we use up space we'll put the less popular games onto a forgtnightly and then monthly schedule. I can't see that EVER having to happen, but you never know.

So, anyway, join up: www.xfire.com/clans/custompc
