..After starting the bidding process as favourites ahead of Russia, Australia and the joint-venture by Spain and Portugal, England's 2018 campaign has hit choppy waters in recent weeks.

England's bid has been severely criticised by Jack Warner, one of FIFA's executive committee members, and Lord Triesman, the English bid chairman, has come under pressure over his inability to devote more than two days a week to his role.

It is believed that Warner's influence is likely to result in "at least another two votes and probably more like another three or four votes" being lost, according to a report in the Times.

England's bid is also said to be suffering from a lack of financial investment, with the Government's pledge of £5 million in direct funding having been cut to a...

Group G details
Following their 0-0 home draw against Fenerbahce, Arsene Wenger's side again struggled to find the net in Europe but the Dane struck three minutes from time after a raking pass from new skipper Cesc Fabregas.

Porto's 2-1 victory in Istanbul sees the Gunners go through with the Portuguese side and they will contest top spot in Group G in Oporto in a fortnight's time.

There was a hint of controversy to the goal as Kiev did not contest a drop ball and Fabregas picked out Bendtner who fired past visiting keeper Stanislav Bogush at the near post.

Bendtner was booked for removing his shirt in celebration after his first goal since September 23 and an irate Kiev were reduced to ten men shortly after as Olexandr Aliyev was shown a red card for pushing referee Alain...

World Cup qual. - Rooney leads England to vic
Wayne Rooney scored a second-half brace as England made it four wins out of four in World Cup qualifying Group 6 with a 3-1 victory in Belarus.

Group 6: Standings, fixtures and results
Steven Gerrard had given Fabio Capello's side an early lead in Minsk only for Pavel Sitko to equalise for the hosts midway through the first-half.

But Rooney poked home Emile Heskey's cross from the left, five minutes after the break, and then added a superb third after latching on to a Gerrard pass and finishing with aplomb.

For the second time in four days, England had produced a tepid opening 45 minutes.

The visitors had shown early promise with Rooney just inches away from prodding home a Theo Walcott cross from the right before the under-fire Gerrard gave England the lead with a goal reminiscent of so many he has scored for Liverpool.

The ball fell to the midfielder 25 yards out and he curled his shot past diving keeper Yury Zhevnov and into the bottom corner of the net.

Gerrard shot...
