Infinity Ward working on Call of Duty

Activision has confirmed that Infinity Ward is working on a Call of Duty game.

"What we have said is that Infinity Ward is working on a Call of Duty title and you'll hear more details as we advance through the year," said Activision CFO Thomas Tippl, during a conference call discussing earnings for the first quarter of the year.

Tippl did not address whether the game would be a new entry in the Modern Warfare series or a separate take on the Call of Duty franchise.

The announcement comes as Activision reshuffles its handling of the Call of Duty brand in the wake of continuing workforce troubles at Infinity Ward.

Infinity Ward's Call of Duty project is likely the third Call of Duty game hinted at in a March press release discussing COD projects from Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games.

Activision announces new Call of Duty titles,

The Call of Duty franchise is in turmoil. The founders of Infinity Ward, Jason West and Vince Zampella, have been forced out of the developer they turned into a success. Activision has announced major changes in how the game is developed, and is hinting at changes in how it's sold. The latest news? West and Zampella are suing Activision for control of the Call of Duty name.

"Modern Warfare 2 is arguably one of the most successful games in history and together with Call of Duty, has generated more than $3 billion in sales for Activision. In addition, Activision seized control of the Infinity Ward studio, to which Activision had previously granted creative control over all Modern Warfare-branded games," the complaint alleges. "The suit was filed to vindicate the rights of West and Zampella to be paid the compensation they have earned, as well as the contractual rights Activision granted to West and Zampella to control Modern Warfare-branded games."

There were more details on why the two may have been fired. "Instead of thanking, lauding, or just plain paying Jason and Vince for giving Activision the most successful entertainment product ever offered to the public, last month Activision hired lawyers to conduct a pretextual 'investigation' into unstated and unsubstantiated charges of 'insubordination' and 'breach of fiduciary duty,' which then became the grounds for their termination on Monday, March 1st," the duo's lawyer stated.

What's at stake here? Money. Lots of money. Not to mention the future of the Modern Warfare name itself, which carries immense worth.. Activision has never been one to back down from a legal fight; this could get very interesting very quickly.
What's coming for Call of Duty?

It's purely speculation at this point, but it's possible that the brass at Infinity Ward had a slight problem with what Activision was planning in the Call of Duty world. "The company intends to expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on high-margin digital online content and further[ing] the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models," Activision announced.

Treyarch is planning on released a Call of Duty game in the fall, there is new content coming to Modern Warfare 2, and the game is on the way to "new geographies and genres." A free-to-play kart-racing game for Korea? Possible!

Another game is coming in 2011, helmed by ex-EA talent. "Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed, wholly owned studio, is in development on a Call of Duty game that will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre. Sledgehammer is helmed by industry veterans Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey," Activision stated. "Prior to joining Activision Publishing, Schofield was the Executive Producer of the award-winning game, Dead Space and Michael Condrey was the Sr. Development Director on the game."

"If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise," Bobby Kotick said in the most recent earnings call.
What does this all mean?

It means that Activision Blizzard hasn't learned anything from the Guitar Hero franchise. The rhythm game genre is in flames, mostly due to oversaturation. Activision seems to want to crank out as many Call of Duty games as possible as quickly as possible, while the name still carries weight. Infinity Ward was a developer built on quality and attention to detail; it's not surprising there is friction between the two groups.

Activision Blizzard makes its money from a few large franchises, sprinkled with the modest success of other titles. If Guitar Hero can't be brought back to its previous highs and Call of Duty becomes mired in legal action or low-quality sequels, the company will have burned through two of the three series that enable its success. After that, we can only hope Blizzard isn't the next on the list for profit-maximization.

Dan Amrich, Activision's first-party blogger, put a sunny spin on things by focusing on what's important for the company. "At the risk of flames, I can't help but point out that after yesterday's drama, Activision's stock price went up," he said.

Call Of Duty 7 Release Date Is Pencilled In

Activision has pencilled in a November release for the seventh Call Of Duty - which will be set in the late 1960s, during the Vietnam War.

Following this week's rumours, a senior UK trade source today said that the Treyarch-developed title is scheduled to arrive a full 12 months after last year's Modern Warfare 2.

They added that the game would be set during the Vietnam conflict - and takes particular influence from classic movies Apocalypse Now and Platoon.

"It's going to be November again - just as with World At War and Modern Warfare 2,"

"Activision believes that it can own Christmas 2010, just as it has in the last two years.

"Development is on course - and Treyarch have been told the game must be ready to hit shelves before the gifting season."

Call of Duty 7 in the Pipeline

Last week, rumors surfaced that Activision was working on "Call of Duty 7," the next chapter in the wildly popular first-person shooter series. They stemmed from a report on That Videogame Blog, which said that the publisher was looking for "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music."

Besides hinting that the game might be set in some of the many guerrilla-conflict hotspots of the Cold War, the now-pulled report indicated that Treyarch was once again developing. The report made sense, given the annual alternation of Infinity Ward and Treyarch's Call of Duty projects--and the fact that the game formerly known as Call of Duty 6 is now the Call of Duty-less spin-off Modern Warfare 2.

Now comes further proof that Treyarch is already hard at work on a new entry in the series. According to the LinkedIn resume of an animator...

Modern Warfare 2 most pirated game for 2009

Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest money spinner for Activision and it has also become the biggest money spinner for the pirated games market.

According to Torrent Freak, MW2 is the most pirated game for 2009.

Activision has sold over 13 million copies. This is legal. The illegal part is that the PC edition of Modern Warfare 2 has been downloaded over 4 million times and around one million times the Xbox edition. So, the total illegal downloads of the game is over 5 million.

Glitches and Bugs Fix MW2

Early this morning, after being certified by Microsoft, update 1.06 for Modern Warfare 2 was applied, and tossed upon all who wished to play the game online. It was made to fix an entire horde of glitches, bugs and environment exploits found throughout the online multiplayer modes. Did Infinity Ward succeed with this latest patch, or are more waiting for us just beyond the horizon?

With the two major glitches haunting the online multiplayer of Modern Warfare 2, gamers were pleading for a quick patch to fix these bugs up, so they could resume playing MW2 the way it was meant to be played. These glitches are commonly called the "javelin glitch" and the "care package glitch" should never have been able to be used, but through sloppy testing stages, Infinity Ward let them slip through. Fortunately, this latest update eradicated them for us.

Unfortunately, more bugs slid right under IW's radar, and it further proves their sloppy treatment of the post-marketing stage of this game. One particular bug, mentioned here, causes an entire game mode to be morphed into something it never was meant to be. It causes a player to go from one game mode, to a mixed one with different rules, and/or a lot more players than there should be - in some cases doubling the player count.

Experiencing these new bugs is something no gamer should have to do, but through sloppy screening, IW has screwed up once again. It seems more and more patches are on the horizons for everyone.

Modern Warfare: The Movie

As Infinity Ward loves making fast paced, action packed movies like we see in so many different Hollywood variations each year, Stern is asked how he would feel like making a film out of Modern Warfare.

"It would work very well as a film. Hopefully, that's a conversation I'll have with somebody somewhere down the line. Jason West, Steve Macuda and the rest of the guys from Infinity Ward have an interest in doing it and Activision wants to do it. I'd be very curious to give that a try. You've got your source material to draw on, which is the biggest advantage in getting one of these movies off the ground."

So there you have it, head over to GamePro to read the full interview.

MW2 Possible New Multiplayer Modes

Take this with a grain of salt, but this clip sure looks like it's revealing some new multiplayer modes for Modern Warfare 2, found lurking somewhere in the game's code.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYWvAFOwDUU&feature=player_embedded

There are three modes in total: VIP (just like Counter-Strike), Capture The Flag (with a single flag between two teams) and Global Thermonuclear War, which one side has to capture. Once captured, the thing goes off, killing everybody.

If you squint through all the garbage written on-screen, you can make out allegations that these modes are all tucked away on the disc waiting to be unlocked as DLC. Makes sense on a basic level, but the bonkers language isn't helping their cause.

MW2 Release Date un in the air for pc

"The release date for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 is still very much up in the air. A recent Tweet by Infinity Ward's fourzerotwo seems to indicate that he's just as lost as we are when it comes to the PC version's release date

"I know our PC players are anxious for official word. I am as well. I will let you know as soon as I do. I promise. When I left, it was fine."

Remember that the last we heard about Modern Warfare 2's release date was that it was rumored to be pushed back until the 24th. The original release date was November 10, 2009, which is still the planned release date for the console release."

Promodlive v202 RC1 released *UPDATE*

After a few days of delay, the promodlive v2 mod has been released today to the public. The announcement of this mod (then named promod 4.42) a few weeks ago came out of the blue as the scene had finally settled down with promodlive v1. Quite a stir was created within the COD4 scene, but ways were sought to combine forces between the developers of the different versions. The two sides never came to an agreement and Trivve, together with Ingram continued their work and were close to completion last tuesday. Raf1 helped out to straighten out the last errors and today the coders behind V2 feel the mod is ready for its release. As most of you already know, the new mod is built upon the accepted promodlive v1 by Carlisle, but includes several bug fixes and improvements to the code. Eventhough time seems too short to be implemented in the summer LANs, the mod is now in the open.

Promodlive v2 is based on v1, except with the following bug fixes and code-enhancements:

- Fully functional shoutcaster overlay for all resolutions and aspect ratios
- Class loadouts are preserved in the rank file
- Class related binds
- Enhanced client- and server-security
- Small changes/improvements to the hud and menus
- Players left-HUD is rebuilt and therefore it is possible to get rid off for those nice-looking frag-movies
- Full Hardcore-mode support, including support for all gametypes, HC mode will also use cook-nades
- Red enemy crosshair glitch through smoke fixed
- Added a strat mode (promod_mode strat) with nadetraining possibility, similar to AM4PAM
- Client-side scorebot functionality implemented, similar to the PAM4 scorebot.
- Disabled ammo-sharing between SMG and M9 Beretta, as well as reduced weapon switch on M16
- All taunt sounds have been removed

Statement Jan “ paradox” Duchon (Mod tester):"Well, after the successful release of PromodLIVE v1, trivve's crew still worked on fixing things, which were planned in the final version of promod and were not implemented in LIVEv1 because of lack of time. Trivve and ingram did a really great job with this mod, when i tested it i knew that it was what the community needed and that’s it is a step forward for sure. Additions like classbinds, hud/menu tweaks are really great and i think that everyone is going love them :). Now i hope that the community will accept this mod as it did when live v1 was released. It is basically the same mod only with additions and bugfixes. Therefore i hope there will not be any problems. PromodLIVE v2

- class limits bug fixed
- fs_game path checker removed

#UPDATE: v2.02 Release Candidate1 RELEASED!

Modern Warfare Scares Singularity Into 2010

CoD6: Modern Warfare 2
Though not originally planned, Activision has found itself with two AAA shooters coming out this Fall. Namely, Modern Warfare 2 and Singularity. The latter ended up in that position following a few behind-the-scenes delays, and has now been pushed back to 2010 so the all-conquering Modern Warfare 2 doesn't cannibalise its sales:

"The level of excitement for Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 coming out of E3 well exceeded our expectations and therefore we have decided to move Raven's upcoming sci-fi first person action title, Singularity, from 2009 to Q1 2010. We believe that the March quarter will provide a better opportunity to establish the new cutting-edge action IP as a "must-have" title and clears the way for Modern Warfare 2 to dominate this holiday season."
